X-Position: Victor Gischler Secures the X-Men

CBR: Victor Gischler has survived Black Friday and joins us to present you with a true holiday special: personal responses to all your emails.

With Psylocke, Domino, Ororo and Jubilee all having close ties to Logan, will he factor into this title in any way? Will we see his influence on these characters?

Victor Gischler: That's an understandable question, Renaldo, and I plan to discuss with Editor Nick Lowe how/if/when we talk about Logan and what that might be like. Don't look for a Wolverine guest appearance any time soon, but certainly his influence is felt in characters such as Jubilee. It's something that at least needs to be touched on, I think.

Cyclops describes this team as his security team, but what are they securing? Are there still residents on Utopia that aren't part of the X-Men?

Victor Gischler: "Security" is a loose term that covers a lot of things -- basically, any leaks Cyclops thinks needs to be plugged or any X-Men-related issue that looks like it's going to develop into a problem. For example, in the current arc we have some Sentinels in the hands of some people that might cause problems with them down the road. That's X-Men business and needs to be dealt with. But it's also a situation that bleeds over into the rest of Marvel U.

I love the first arc's lineup of characters. It's a great mix of very capable people who can be stealthy and strong with varied powers. Will the focus be on this team for future arcs? Or will certain members take the spotlight?

Victor Gischler: The Marvel U is a fluid place, so if there's one thing I've learned is that things can change -- sometimes in an eye-blink. But my thought is that these are the characters we'll be playing with for a while. Keep your eye on Jubilee for future spotlight goodness.

X-Men #21 Spoilers

Spoilers: War Machine fights Storm and Colossus, but is caught by surprise by an airspace violation by the Symkarians, which changes everything. Storm explains the Sentinel situation to War Machine, and he accepts the X-Men’s help. Meanwhile, Domino’s body is retrieved by the Puternicstans. Psylocke and her team tracks Domino’s location, and on their way, they find out more Sentinels and the details of some project involving the machines, however Betsy and her team are discovered by the Puternicstan soldiers. At the Puternicstan HQ, the Governor explains that by using Domino’s mutant bio-signature, they can get the Sentinel to attack anything they want by tricking it into thinking it’s attacking a mutant. She plans to use the robots against Symkaria and Latveria. At the medical lab, Domino regains consciousness and escapes. The Governor and her men spot Storm, War Machine and Colossus invading their airspace. The Puternicstans activate the Sentinel which was reprogrammed. Their plan works as the Sentinel attacks War Machine after detecting him as a mutant.

It's Speculation Time!

Twitter can be a great source for information sometimes, and every once in a while Marvel writers like to tease us a little bit.

Rick Remender often interacts with fans and answers some interesting questions about ‘Uncanny X-Force’, a book he plans to write for 2-3 years. When asked about Fantomex’s bullets from issue #15, Remender says he’ll be dealing with them in the Otherworld arc (issues #20-23). He also adds that after Schism, X-Force will have more new members than the ones seen in the teaser.

You also might have noticed subtle changes to Psylocke’s uniform in the current arc. Remender confirms it’s her new suit for ‘Uncanny X-Force’. Jerome Opeña told us he was asked to design something similar to Betsy’s classic uniform. He adds that he still might tweak it a bit in upcoming issues, but it will stay pretty close to how it was seen in issues #14 and #15. Did you like it?

Let’s also not forget Victor Gischler, the writer of ‘X-Men’. When asked about who’s really leading his team, Gischler says Storm is, but that Psylocke plays an important role as well. Are you guys excited?

X-Men #1 Spoilers

Spoilers: Jubilee and Pixie are hanging out in San Francisco, when a suicide bomber strikes. His blood is spilled all over the people who were around him, including Jubilee. In Utopia, Cyclops suspects there was more to the attack than just being the usual terrorists. Jubilee is brought to Utopia and tells Cyclops the bomber just tore off his coat and exploded. "Flesh burning in the daylight" makes Cyclops think they're dealing with vampires. Jubilee was infected during the bombing, an infection which is progressing rapidly. Dr. Nemesis reveals the virus was manufactured as they wanted to spread the virus and that there is no cure for the time being. At night, all the people infected with the virus during the bombing gather together in the woods, somehow hypnotized, to bring themselves to the Vampires in charge of the attack. The vampires are expecting Jubilee to show up at any minute, as she was the one "he" wanted. Back to the X-Men, Storm wants to check this story out, since she has history with Dracula. Scott forbids her, and sends Wolverine instead. Logan, Angel and Pixie find a safehouse full of weapons and fresh bodies, as well as a vampire woman who mentions the Lord of the Vampires being in town. Scott tells them to return, as it's time for the X-Men to hold a war council. Meanwhile, Jubilee tries to pretend she's okay, but she's growing paler and unconfortable with the sunlight by the second...

Notes: No Psylocke.

Victor Gischler Talks Psylocke

The free "X-Men - Curse of the Mutants Saga" one-shot that came out today features an all-new interview with Victor Gischler, writer of the upcoming X-Men (vol. 3) title. A certain psychic ninja might be in his plans...

Marvel: Can you sum up in a few words what you like about the roster of mutants you'll be dealing with?

Victor: The events in the first arc are big enough that the X-Men need all hands on deck, so we haven't settled into the core team just yet. It's still being decided. I can tell you that I have my eye on Gambit and am taking a closer look at Psylocke, but I need to discuss this with the bigwigs back at the X-Office, too. I am also warming up to Pixie. I think she's had the training wheels come off recently and is ready to struf her stuff a little more. I also want to have a few "staples" on the team, but as I said, it's all still being discussed and nothing is fore sure yet until we battle our way thtough the first arc.

X-Position: Victor Gischler

CBR: Victor Gischler joins X-Position today to answer all the questions about his new X-Men book and its initial "vampire-iffic" tale.

As a Nate Grey fan, I'm thrilled to see that Nate will be showing up in the opening arc of your new "X-Men" book. Back in his solo book days, Nate fought Morbius and was bitten by him. Luckily, Nate's TK fought off the vampire "infection." With this in mind, I was wondering – are mutants with telekinesis (like Psylocke, Exodus, and Hellion) immune to vampirism? Or do you need to have "super-TK" like Nate to fight off the vampire infection?

Victor Gischler: Whoa, Malcolm! You're venturing into spoiler territory, so I apologize for the lame answer you're about to get. As far as Nate goes, I'll refer you to the answer above. The roster wars continue to rage in my brain and the brains of the editors, and, again, we have some good ideas, but nothing etched in stone yet. Nate presents some interesting possibilities. We'll just have to see how it all plays out. (And as far as the vampire "infection" goes, everyone knows a double-dose of Vitamin C and a good night's sleep will clear that right up.)

I don't think the "We Are The X-Men" teasers for your new "X-Men" book have been thoroughly explained yet. Will Magneto, Psylocke, Gambit, Hope and Nate Grey play a bigger role in your series? Or were they just randomly chosen? And what about Spider-Man, She Hulk, Elektra? When and how will they show up?

Victor Gischler: I understand wanting some clearer info, Giselle. I really do. But as previously discussed, we are knocking our heads together to make sure we get the roster just right. (Yes, I know that's a lame answer and I am ashamed.)

Interviews: "X-Men" and "New X-Force"

Gischler: My desire is that the cast of characters will be a combination of both big name and lesser known characters. I think we'll see a wider cast of characters for the first arc, while we're getting situated. Then the following arcs will kind of narrow things down to a core cast. I don't want to say that we're holding auditions for the first arc, but it almost is like that. We've got the whole team and everybody is available for that first arc. Then in following stories we kind of whittle things down to the people we see every issue.

Plus, since the book is a part of the X-Men line, there's a good chance that we'll see characters rotate in and out from story to story. So new faces might come and go, but that will be along side the core cast that we see every month.

Axel Alonso: "Our story will pick up with a suicide bombing in San Francisco’s Union Square. But this is not Al Qaeda—this is the opening shot of a war," he writes. "Vampires are descending on the Bay Area, commanded by their, let’s just say, enigmatic leader, and mutants appear to be their target. What follows is a war on several fronts, as the X-Men defend their home from a threat unlike anything they’ve ever faced. There will be twists and turns you can’t see coming, and there will be some permanent status quo changes."

Gischler: Vampires are the adversaries in the first arc, and the way we're approaching the bloodsuckers is going to be pretty cool. But that's just the first arc. Vampires don't define this new X-men team. The X-men have been fighiting for survival for a long tim, but this is the X-Men team the represents a new era. This team engages the Marvel U more in a proactive, mission-oriented way. Since the X-Men will be engaging the Marvel U more fully in this title, yes you're going to see the guest stars. The particular situation or villains they face will help dictate which guest star is most appropriate for a particular arc.

Remender: The new X-Force team has a network of people looking out for Apocalypse's rise and could be faced with the moral quandary of being able to execute the immortal villain as an infant. "One of the members of the team has had operatives hunting for signs of the return of En Sabah Nur for years. We open as the operative discovers what he's been seeking. Turns out when the rest of the world is celebrating the defeat of a tyrant, humanity entering a new 'Heroic Age' is the first big signpost of the Age of Apocalypse. X-Force is reformed with one objective: kill Apocalypse."

Remender: X-Force will now be Wolverine and a team of the toughest X characters ever assembled. Logan will be a co-captain, serving with one of the other members, for reasons readers will soon discover. This adds a wonderful internal conflict and drama in this new band of X-Men. These are the hardcores of the X-family; these are the heroes who have most frequently walked the line, made the distasteful yet necessary choices. They’ve stained their souls for the greater good and just as it seems they’ll be able to heal from the work, they are tasked with their most critical assassination ever. Meet the all-new all-different X-Force this July.

Remender: I think people will be excited about who it's going to be. It's all A-list characters. Because of the initial threat and because of what they're dealing with in the first arc with the imminent, looming Age of Apocalypse, it appears the Heroic Age is a lamppost for the Akkaba Society to start building up their plans to begin the Age of Apocalypse. This is preordained business and blah blah blah. The idea is that the team is necessary and that the team is also of a caliber to deal with Apocalypse – a mega-level threat. Not that the last team wasn't, but they're all heavy hitters on this team.
