Astonishing X-Men #12 Spoilers

Spoilers: The Shadow King reclaims his physical form and faces the X-Men, spilling his vile poison and spreading his darkness. One by one, the X-Men fall, except Psylocke whose powers allow her to resist his onslaught. Bishop’s database confirms this is the Mindkiller Apocalypse it had warned about before. The reality gardens Proteus had seeded are now being used by Farouk to spread his filth all over the world. Bishop, Gambit, Archangel, Rogue, Mystique and Logan are overwhelmed by emotional breakdowns, and soon Psylocke follows suit and falls. X who had been watching the battle refuses to give up and heals himself, standing up to face the Shadow King. X asks for Betsy’s help to defeat Farouk, but she thinks they’re not enough. X says they won’t be alone, and together they create another psychic network linking every psychic in the world, including Emma Frost, Quentin Quire, Rachel Grey, the Cuckoos, Synapse and many others. Psylocke channels the power of every psychic and unleashes it against the Shadow King, shrinking him into a small, measly spider. X steps on the spider, ending Farouk, and Psylocke purifies the filth that had taken over the world and the other X-Men. X thanks Psylocke for saving the world and reassures her he is still X, not Charles Xavier, because he has changed. The other X-Men are suspicious about X, but Betsy vouches for him, telling them the Shadow King is gone. As a reward, X gives them all gifts:

• For Archangel: the choice of being Angel, Archangel or just Warren as he needs.
• For Gambit: the purpose of finding Fantomex and paying his debts.
• For Mystique and Rogue: understanding of being everyone on the outside, but always being Raven and Anna on the inside.
• For Bishop: the permission to be part of the world and set his mission aside for a change.
• For Logan: the vision to see all the good he does.
• For all of them: oblivion; they all will forget what has happened.

X then gifts Betsy the gift of memory for only she will remember and know that X has returned. He wants her to watch him and make sure the Shadow King is truly gone. Psylocke suggests he brings all those psychics to the school. X says he won’t return to the school for he is not Xavier, he is X and has a new dream now.

Astonishing X-Men #11 Spoilers

Spoilers: Proteus’ garden – a gestalt of confused and twisted mindscapes – grows in Fetters Hills. It soon spreads to other parts of the world. Psylocke takes command and orders the X-Men to attack. First, Archangel and Old Man Logan as metal is Proteus’ only weakness. Psylocke and X sense other reality seeds sprouting everywhere and leave the battle to save the rest of the world. Proteus is weakened and attacks the X-Men before fleeing. Warren catches up to him and shoots more metal feathers. The enraged Proteus fires back and disintegrates Archangel’s wings. Mystique poses as Moira to get close to Proteus but it’s no use. Proteus attacks both Mystique and Old Man Logan, but he is too hungry and weak now. Gambit tricks Proteus so that Rogue surprises him from behind. Proteus tries to eat Rogue, but Bishop arrives and absorbs Proteus, projecting his energy into the air, seemingly killing him.

Meanwhile, Psylocke orders X to give his psychic strength to her as she plans to burn out the reality seeds. They try to suppress the reality seed in Tokyo but it’s not enough. X suggests Betsy tap into the network of psychics the Shadow King was trying to access earlier to escape the Astral Plane. Psylocke agrees. Their plan works and X notices that with this much power they could do anything. Psylocke knows something is off. Betsy is astonished when X’s body is torn in half and the Shadow King emerges victorious as this was his plan all along.

Astonishing X-Men #10 Spoilers

Spoilers: Aboard the Blackbird, the X-Men decide that Psylocke is going to lead the team as they don’t trust X yet. At Fetters Hill, reality is collapsing on itself when the inhabitants’ most insane thoughts are given life by Proteus. The Blackbird is taken down by a dragon and the X-Men regroup on the floor. Psylocke orders them to fight Proteus’ psychic manifestations to weaken him. Proteus emerges from the earth and tells the X-Men that he had granted powers to the townsfolks as an experiment to create a beautiful garden with many minds shaping reality all at once. Kevin says it was the civilians who killed one another, not him. Proteus asks X why he is so afraid of his garden if he believes that mutants and humans can coexist peacefully. Proteus won’t submit to the tyranny of reality and wants his garden to grow. Fetters Hill is then engulfed by a massive explosion.

Astonishing X-Men #9 Spoilers

Spoilers: The merged form of Psylocke and X appears in front of the other X-Men in a confused state. Warren knows Proteus’ weak spot is metal and decides to rescue Betsy with his wings, having a heartfelt moment with her. X is also rescued but not before he tells the others he took Fantomex’s body to build his own, which means no healing factor. Psylocke then induces the wounded X to sleep. The X-Men pick up Bishop and they all board the Blackbird, in which the med bay heals X. Bishop warns Betsy about the mindkiller incident which ends up with the end of the world. Psylocke knows they must stop Proteus and tells Rogue to head north, following his track. Later, X regains consciousness and warns the others about Proteus’ plans: he wants to bring the Astral Plane to the physical world, where anyone can turn thoughts into reality.

Meanwhile, Proteus has found his way to the small village of Fetters Hill in Scotland. He gathers all the people in town and builds a wall around the village, guarded by warriors in order not to be interrupted. He proceeds with his plans, promising everyone he will give them everything they want. Proteus spreads his powers throughout every villager and grants them the power to bend reality as they see fit. Astonishing X-Men #8 Spoilers

Spoilers: When Proteus is set free, Rogue and Mystique are suspicious of X, but Psylocke asks them to stop arguing and deal with Proteus first. Elsewhere, Proteus is hungry and ready to feed on a family of civilians, but Bishop shoots at him and saves the family. X contacts Bishop and orders him to stop shooting because he’s just feeding Proteus and making him stronger instead. Proteus grabs Bishop’s gun and shoots at himself, becoming larger and stronger.

Back to the X-Men, Logan, Gambit and Archangel reunite with the rest. Rogue and Gambit hold each other, and Warren assures Betsy he’s in control even as Archangel. Logan is suspicious of X as well. X explains to the boys that he’s Xavier using Fantomex’s body. Logan knows Proteus is vulnerable to metal and wants to face him with Archangel. X wants to reason with him first and asks for Psylocke’s help to enter Proteus’ mind together.

Proteus feels his mind being forced into and allows X and Psylocke to enter his mental landscape. X and Betsy find themselves near a beautiful castle where they are welcomed by the young Kevin McTaggert. Kevin believes atonement and change are possible and remembers he was only ten years old at the time Colossus killed him back at Muir Island. He came back a few times after that, but the X-Men were always there to kill him just because he dared to see the world after ten years imprisoned by his own mother. When the Shadow King grabbed ahold of his psyche, he spent ten thousand years on the Astral Plane reflecting on what he had done to all the poor people he had possessed back then.

Kevin shows Betsy a image of her original body dressed in the pink uniform and asks her if she is still the same person she was when she started her journey. Psylocke says no. Kevin argues that just because he did something bad in the past, the X-Men want to kill him again. Proteus says if they leave him alone, he will leave them alone as well. X doesn’t want to risk, and attacks Kevin instead. In retaliation, Proteus merges the physical bodies of X and Psylocke and sends them back to London.

Charles Soule Talks the Astonishing Return of Charles Xavier

CBR: In the Marvel Universe, death is more often than not far from the end of a hero’s journey. Of course, when a hero returns from the dead, sometimes their personality changes in radical ways — ways that frighten and confound their friends and loved ones. What happens, then, when one of the most powerful telepaths in the Marvel Universe returns after fighting a brutal war on the Astral Plane that seemingly spanned centuries?

The X-Men are wrestling with that question right now in “A Man Called X,” the current arc of writer Charles Soule’s Astonishing X-Men. The team’s founder, Charles Xavier, has returned from the grave in an unexpected fashion and is behaving in unsettlingly unusual ways. Worst of all, one of the X-Men’s most powerful foes has followed him back: the reality warper known as Proteus.

CBR: The center of your first act of your Astonishing X-Men run is the return of team founder, Charles Xavier, and it looks like he’s a large part of Act II as well. Is the larger interconnected story you’re telling in Astonishing X-Men about the return of Xavier and what he means to your various characters?

Charles Soule: That’s right – Astonishing X-Men is the story of Charles Xavier’s return to the Marvel Universe after his death in the Avengers vs. X-Men event all the way back in 2012. I’ve always liked Professor X, and I think he fills an important role in the overall mutant landscape, so the opportunity to bring him back to life was an easy sell to me. Of course, as we’ve seen, just because he’s back doesn’t mean he’s exactly the same. I think that bringing a character back needs to mean something, just like killing them. There should be a reason, and they should be changed by the experience. As we’ve seen, Xavier has been through a lot since his death. Exploring that is a big part of Acts II and III of the story.

It’s great to have Xavier back, but one of the things that made his return so interesting the question of whether this is a situation of be careful what you wish for. I’m getting a sense of sort of psychological horror and mystery to his resurrection, like there’s something unsettling just out of focus that I can’t see yet. Was that your intention?

Yes it was! Xavier spent what felt like centuries battling the Shadow King on the Astral Plane, an unending stretch of mental and psychological war. He was hanging on by his fingernails, essentially a toy for one of the vilest entities in the Marvel Universe. You don’t come out of that without paying a cost.

When we catch up with him in Astonishing X-Men #7 Charles isn’t exactly the same person the X-Men knew and loved. But is he as powerful as he used to be?

Charles, or X, as he currently prefers to be called, is extremely powerful, as we’ve seen in AXM #7. He was always extremely powerful, though – omega-level, I believe. Plus, a thousand years of psychic war is bound to sharpen your skills, too. So, no problems there on the power level front – the issue might be more what he chooses to do with that power. He was always pretty grey, in my mind, using his powers to wipe minds and push people where he thought they should be in service of the larger dream. We’ll see where he lands now.

What’s it like bouncing Xavier off the rest of your cast? Which character dynamics have you especially enjoyed writing in “A Man Called X?”

X isn’t the only return in Act II of Astonishing X-Men. We also see the resurrection of a villain we haven’t seen in X-comics in almost a decade, someone who was known as Mutant X back in his day. So, the question here is whose story is this, really? X, Mutant X — or someone else?

We also can’t forget that X returned by taking Fantomex’s body, and converting its substance into his own. Fantomex’s consciousness currently resides on the astral plane – he’s attempting to be something like a “kinder, gentler Shadow King.” So, lots of changes, lots of tension, and writing the rest of the cast react to that has been a blast, especially people like Mystique, who never trust anyone.

Approximately how much story time passed between the end of Act I and the beginning of “A Man Called X?” What can you tell us about the inciting incident of the story and some of the action?

It’s all picking up right away. The story is falling dominoes, one after the other. My plan from the start was to write a series that felt breathless, paced so you could barely process one revelation before the next hit you. The inciting incidents for “A Man Called X” are the return of Xavier in his new form, and then the return of this new villain. Those two things and how they connect form the spine of Act II.

Let’s talk a little bit about the returning villain you’ve hinted at. He makes his appearance at the end of Astonishing X-Men #7. Mystique identifies him as Proteus AKA Kevin MacTaggert.

Now that the issue’s been out for almost a week, I think I feel comfortable just saying it, despite my teases above –Yes, the new, returning villain is Proteus. He’s the super-powerful mutant son of Moira MacTaggert, with the ability to warp reality and possess bodies. He has put the mutants through their paces many, many times in the past, and I want to take him to a new place. I think X-fans new and old will really enjoy it.

One of the toughest parts of writing an X-Men book — really, any team book — is finding moments to spotlight each of your cast members. Who are some of the regular cast that will get big moments in this arc?

Psylocke has some really cool stuff to do, as does Rogue. Bishop is crucial here because he has what he calls his Endtime Database, with files on possible apocalypses and their inciting events. He sees some very troubling signs in what’s been happening recently, and might have to take some drastic action.

One thing I’ve loved about your Astonishing X-Men run is that each issue features a different artist. You kicked this arc off by reuniting with your original Poe Dameron collaborator, Phil Noto. What was it like working on this story with Phil? Who are some of the other artists you’ll be collaborating with on this arc?

I love working with Phil, and I’ve particularly enjoyed seeing him draw the X-Men. This is our third collaboration – we did an issue of Thunderbolts way back when at the very start of my time working for Marvel, then our long run on Poe Dameron, and now this issue. I think he knocked it out of the park, especially the stuff with Archangel and Old Man Logan. I can’t wait to do something with him again soon. The other artists on the book for Act II that have been announced are Paulo Siqueira, Matteo Buffagni and ACO, and they’ll all bring something unique and awesome to the title, just like the artists in Act I. This book looks incredible.

Finally, you’ve got quite a large cast, but I imagine once word gets out of Xavier’s return, other X-Men — and perhaps characters from around the Marvel Universe — will come to investigate. Is that something we’ll see right away? Or further down the road?

As I mentioned, this is an incredibly fast-paced series. It’s taking place over the course of a few days in Marvel Universe time. We’ll get to see X’s re-introduction to the mutants and other figures in the MU, but it may take a bit.

I’ve been really happy with the response to this series – I think it’s one of the strongest things I’ve written at Marvel, and I’m looking forward to the trade of Act I hitting in March so even more folks will have a chance to check it out.

Astonishing X-Men #7 Spoilers

Spoilers: When Xavier returns in Fantomex’s body, he promises the X-Men he’ll answer all their questions, but first he must handle the fallout of the Shadow King’s plans. Xavier reaches out to Warren and gives him the gift of keeping Archangel under control. Now with all the power, and none of the rage, Warren stops the missiles from hitting London. Xavier then contacts the British authorities and mindwipes them into forgetting the X-Men’s shenanigans in London. Charles starts purging the Shadow King’s infection from all victims, including Bishop. Psylocke, Rogue and Mystique are suspicious about the new Xavier, and Betsy decides to take a trip to the Astral Plane and talk to Fantomex herself. There, Psylocke explains that he’ll be stuck in the Astral Plane as long as Xavier has his body, but Fantomex assures her it was his choice. Betsy points out Xavier could have induced him mentally, but Fantomex says he’s at peace with that as well. Back in London, Old Man Logan and Gambit watch as Xavier gathers the infection in the shape of a green sun. Archangel meets them, and the trio wonder if it was really Xavier’s doing. Bishop accesses his database to investigate the green sun and is informed it means an inciting incident of the Mindkiller Apocalypse. Xavier, Psylocke, Rogue and Mystique watch as Archangel bring Logan and Gambit to their location. Xavier says he’ll have gifts for all of them, but is soon interrupted when all the infection he’s purged becomes alive. They all know what it means: Proteus has returned.

Note: Psylocke doesn’t appear in Phoenix Resurrection #2, but is mentioned by Kitty to be recovering from her injuries.

Astonishing X-Men #6 Spoilers

Spoilers: As the psychic infection spreads throughout London, the Shadow King claims victory against Xavier in the Astral Plane. Farouk reveals he has cheated by using an additional power source to boost his powers. Xavier surprises him by reveling he too has cheated and unveils the presence of Rogue, Fantomex and Mystique, who attack the King. Back to London, Archangel shoots feathers at both Logan and Gambit as the Ministry of Defense considers bombing out London to prevent the infection from spreading. Psylocke overhears the Ministry informing the clean room protocol has been activated and learns what it means by reading the mind of one soldier. Back at the Astral Plane, Xavier ponders that each X-Men had a role to play and they were perfect for this battle. The Professor notices that Farouk is too busy simultaneously defending himself against the X-Men, spreading the infection in London, controlling Gambit and Logan and keeping Charles chained. Xavier uses this opportunity to free himself and kill the Shadow King. Fantomex talks about sacrifice and doing something big everyone will remember. Meanwhile in London, Gambit and Logan come to their senses. Psylocke contacts Archangel and tells him that the Shadow King is gone, but they both notice the people of London remain infected, including Bishop. Betsy tells Warren that he needs to stop the Ministry’s plane from dropping a bomb on London. Psylocke is then surprised by Fantomex. He takes off his mask and reveals he’s Charles Xavier now. Xavier says everything will be alright.

Astonishing X-Men: A Man Called X

Marvel.com: Ever since Cyclops apparently killed Professor X back in 2012’s Avengers vs. X-Men #11, Charles’s consciousness has been forced to cling to life in the astral plane. What kind of impact has this had on him? How will it affect his decisions moving forward?

On January 3, writer Charles Soule and artist Phil Noto begin to answer those queries with Astonishing X-Men #7! In “A Man Called X,” the mutants finally get their reunion—but it may not be exactly what they’ve expected.

We contacted Soule via telepathy to hear more about what to expect in the new issue.

Marvel.com: How has Professor X changed since we saw him last? Will we see a different Charles when he returns?

Charles Soule: As we’ve seen in Astonishing X-Men thus far, Xavier’s spirit, or soul, or life force (depending on how you want to think about it) got taken after his death by one of his oldest and most powerful adversaries—Amahl Farouk, The Shadow King. Farouk brought Xavier’s spirit to his home, in the bizarre parallel dimension called the Astral Plane, where anything you imagine becomes real. So, since his death, Xavier has been held prisoner on the Astral Plane, with The Shadow King toying with him in all sorts of terrible ways. Even worse—time runs differently in Farouk’s dimension, so even though it’s only been a few years since Cyclops killed Xavier in the Avengers vs. X-Men story, for poor Professor X it feels like it’s been millennia.

Marvel.com: What can you tease about how he’ll make his comeback?

Charles Soule: When we pick up the story in Astonishing X-Men, Farouk and Xavier get embroiled in a sort of psychic chess game, with a group of X-Men (Old Man Logan, Psylocke, Fantomex, Rogue, Gambit, Bishop, Angel, and Mystique) as the pieces. The Shadow King plays the game to pass the time, and also to hopefully build himself a pathway out of the Astral Plane so he can wreak havoc in our world. Xavier does his best to beat him…but The Shadow King holds all the cards. We’ll see how it goes.

Marvel.com: Charles has a plan…but it sounds like not everyone supports it. What kind of push back will he face?

Charles Soule: As the story has developed, we’ve seen that the battle on the Astral Plane has had effects that have rippled out into our world, especially in London, where the story takes place. Some sort of psychic infection has been spreading rapidly among the city’s populace (including Bishop!), and the human authorities with the British Ministry of Defence look set to take drastic action to stop it from going any further. Beyond that, Gambit and Logan have both been possessed by The Shadow King and have gone around murdering people, and Archangel looks to be on the verge of losing his mind.

So…things are bad. If Xavier might somehow fix all this, it’ll take drastic measures. We’ll see if the cure will be worse than the disease.

Marvel.com: A lot of readers consider Xavier a favorite. What have you enjoyed about bringing him into this story?

Charles Soule: I like the fact that he’s really very morally grey. He’s not Magneto, but he’s not as far from him as he’d like to think—and the stories we’ve seen with him really bear that out. Xavier is brilliant, incredibly gifted, and always 10 steps ahead. That’s the kind of character I love to write. Also, I just missed him in the stories. Professor X is cool.

Marvel.com: What else would you like to mention?

Charles Soule: We have some fantastic artists coming up on the series for its back half, including my longtime partner on the Poe Dameron series, Phil Noto, for issue #7, and someone I’ve been dying to work with on issue #10—ACO.

Issue #6 ends Act I of the series, “Life of X,” but then we move right into Act II: “A Man Called X,” which flips the story a bit and makes it about something new that will feel completely organic with what we’ve already seen. And then there’s Act III…which will be the culmination of the whole thing. It’s been a blast to construct a series like this, and I hope people enjoy seeing where it goes.

Witness the return of Charles Xavier in Astonishing X-Men #7, by writer Charles Soule and artist Phil Noto, on January 3!
