Schism #1 Spoilers

Spoilers: Cyclops wants Wolverine to travel with him to Switzerland and back him up, as Scott is attending an international arms conference with world leaders. Logan is not too crazy about the idea, and ends up arguing with Scott on their way there. At the meeting, Cyclops gives his speech, encouraging nations to stop the Sentinel program once and for all. Kid Omega breaks into the room and mentally force the world leaders to reveal their deepest and darkest secrets. Quentin Quire leaves, and Cyclops and Wolverine are left to deal with his mess. The world leaders accuse mutants of terrorism and activate a Sentinel to hunt Kid Omega. Cyclops and Wolverine take it out and return to Utopia. Meanwhile, Kid Omega spreads his anti-human hate speech on the TV. As a response, several nations all over the world activate hundreds of Sentinels heading to Utopia. Elsewhere, Kade Kilgore, the 12-year-old son of an arms manufacturer, kills his father. The kid then attends a secret meeting, where he reveals he secretly freed Kid Omega and took over his father's business, setting up the pieces to a new anti-mutant hysteria. Kade Kilgore is then hailed the new Black King of the Hellfire Club.

X-Men: Schism - Choosing Sides

Newsarama: What side of the battle will the various X-Men choose? X-Men: Schism #1 debuts this week, kicking off what looks to be the most significant X-Men storyline since House of M. The X-Men are about to face a threat so great that it tears them down the middle. By the end of this event, Cyclops and Wolverine will have a falling out, and each will leave to form their own faction of X-Men. Following the conclusion of Schism, Jason Aaron will chronicle the adventures of Wolverine's team in Wolverine and the X-Men, while Kieron Gillen will spotlight Cyclops' group in a new volume of Uncanny X-Men.

We don't know much yet about this mysterious threat and the cause of the philosophical split. However, given the state of X-Men affairs these past few years, we do feel that we can make some predictions as to which side the major X-Men characters will fall on. Team Cyclops or Team Wolverine? These character profiles will help get you caught up to speed and debating on whose side each X-Man will choose.

Psylocke: As another member of the clandestine X-Force squad, Psylocke is all but certain to stick by Wolverine in this fight. Psylocke understands better than most X-Men what sacrifices are needed to protect the mutant race. Her methodology may be too extreme for Cyclops, but Wolverine understands her all too well.

There is always the chance that Psylocke will turn away from X-Force and seek a life that doesn't involve murdering children and traveling to alternate universes. In that case, a little distance from Wolverine and X-Force may be just what Psylocke needs. But for now, it's a safe bet she'll be joining Team Wolverine. Team Wolverine

Jason Aaron Guides Wolverine Through Schism and a ReGenesis

Newsarama: The post-Schism X-Men status quo is being dubbed by Marvel as "X-Men: Regenesis," with Wolverine and the X-Men being joined in November by a new Uncanny X-Men #1. Newsarama talked with Jason Aaron to get a little clearer picture of what lies ahead, including the tantalizing hint that there's at least one character who "Wolverine literally has to drag with him in chains."

Alonso & Lowe Divorce Marvel's Mutants in X-Men: Regenesis

Rick Remender just tweeted: "None of the changes in other X-books will affect Uncanny X-Force. The stories interconnect but the book and purpose remain." So it looks like X-Force is safe, and it still remains the black ops undercover group book!

With plenty of details still under wraps, Newsarama consulted Marvel editor-in-chief Axel Alonso and X-Men group editor Nick Lowe to get some answers to these questions, and try to get a little bit of a clearer picture of what's in store for the X-Men in the near future.

Nrama: With the announcement today came the "Who Will You Follow?" teaser image. How literal should we be taking it? Is this at all an accurate representation of who is going to end up on which side, or more just a red herring/metaphorical illustration? Then there's the curious matter of Professor X back in a wheelchair, which seems like it must be there for a reason.

Alonso: The “Who Will You Follow?” teaser image is just that: a teaser image. It should not to be taken literally. Professor X’s wheelchair is meant to give the image a classic feel — we’re not putting him back in it. And who’s to say that everyone in that picture will still be alive this September?

Nrama: On the conference call last week, there was talk of how the philosophical split between Cyclops and Wolverine had to be played in a way that both sides had a reasonable argument, without either being clearly "right." Was the same kind of doctrine applied to establishing the direction characters would go in the split? Making sure that both teams were balanced, and not one was too stacked — either in terms of popularity of power sets?

Lowe: As a group we wrestled with this a lot. We had a mini-X-Retreat back in January. We had X-Writers and X-Editorial there working through Schism and its aftermath and a big part of that meeting was who goes where and why. It mainly came down to individual characters and belief systems. Once you know what the philosophical issue is it’ll make a lot more sense. It wasn’t like an NFL general manager or coach decided who to draft or trade to build the strongest team. It’s up to the individual X-Men, not the leaders of each side.

Nrama: And on that note, are there going to be any mutants who either reject the idea of the split entirely, or choose to stay neutral?

Alonso: Given the nature of the split, that would be hard to do.

Nrama: It's natural to hear this news and wonder how the other X-books will be affected. X-Men: Legacy has just started to establish its own team with Rogue, Magneto, Xavier, etc., a dynamic that would seem to be untenable post-Schism. Adjectiveless X-Men and Astonishing have a bit more of a fluid format, but would also seem to be affected greatly. Are we headed for another shift in direction for Legacy? Will all these titles be sticking around?

Lowe: All the X-Books are going to have to react and deal with the status quo coming out of Schism. Mike Carey, who is the bees knees, has some amazing plans all throughout Schism and has really cool ideas on what Legacy is going to be after that. Adjectiveless X-Men will also feel the effects of Schism but will keep its identity as the most Marvel U-ingrained X-Book with lots of ties to the greater universe. Astonishing, well that’s going to be an announcement all to itself. And you didn’t even mention Uncanny X-Force or New Mutants or X-Factor or Generation Hope. They are all going to feel the effects and be changed by Schism.

Nrama: Let's look at Uncanny X-Force, then — we can't imagine that book is going anywhere, but given Wolverine's leadership status on that team, can we intuit from today's news that there will likely be a significant impact on the book?

Lowe: Yep! You’ll see effects there, too. You’ll have to wait a month or two after the rest of the books because Rick and Jerome are still in the middle of the “Dark Angel Saga” saga as well. But both Schism and “Dark Angel Saga” will change that book in big ways.

Newsarama: Jason Aaron Pits Wolverine Against Cyclops in X-Men: Schism

CBR: The conflict of "Schism" is set in motion with the surprise return of a character to the pages of the X-Universe. "Things kick into gear with the return of a character from Grant Morrison's 'New X-Men' run. This is one of my favorite characters from that run, and I'm a big fan of that run in general," Aaron explained. "That character's return sparks a worldwide resurgence of mutant fear and hatred. You'll see more Sentinels in an X-book than you've seen in quite a while."

When this crisis erupts, Cyclops is forced to develop a plan to deal with it, and his plan causes Wolverine, one of his most capable lieutenants, much concern. "At its core, 'Schism' is a story about Cyclops and Wolverine. There's a lot of other characters and elements swirling around them, but at the end of the day it really comes down to these two men and how they differ in a couple of fundamental ways," Aaron said. "Cyclops is the X-Men's leader and Logan doesn't want to assume his position. It's not his natural instinct. This book isn't about Wolverine coming in and suddenly deciding to lead his own branch of the X-Men. This story is really about a falling out between Scott and Logan and what brings that about. They find themselves at a real crossroads in their relationship and the differences that come between them pushes each of them in a very different direction."

While Wolverine and Cyclops have been comrades on the X-Men for many years, Aaron doesn't believe the two ever had a friendly relationship. "They were never friends, but Logan has come to look at Scott as his general. He's come to respect him much more as a leader these last few years as Scott has taken control and taken mutants to places they've never been before," Aaron said. "Logan has always been the good soldier, sometimes maybe a little bit begrudgingly, but he's always been right by Scott's side and gone out of his way to do everything he could to bring about Scott's vision. Now they find themselves at an impasse, and for the first time Logan says no. He feels the train has gone off the tracks."

Wolverine's perspective will be part of "Schism," but so will Cyclops.' Aaron wants his story to be as morally complex for readers as it is for the X-Men. "This is not a story about painting anyone as a villain or about one side being right and the other side being wrong. In some sense this is 'Civil War' with the X-Men, but it's not a civil war where there's a mustache twirling villain. We're dealing with two guys who have very strong principles and very strong beliefs," Aaron stated. "They also have definite ideas about what the X-Men should be doing and how they should be doing it. They just find themselves at an impasse. So hopefully we've created a situation where both sides will make complete sense in one way or the other.

"It's funny, I've even felt divided writing this story. I can see the strengths and weaknesses in both Cyclops' and Wolverine's arguments," Aaron continued. "When we first started talking about this story at one of the X-retreats we realized that we just got hung up arguing one side against the other. We had people in the room divided. Some of us thought, 'Why would this happen? This seems to be the right way.' Others felt the opposite. I think that means we're onto something. If we can't even get all these people in the room to agree on which side is right and which side is wrong, hopefully readers will be torn as well. We're creating a sticky situation here. It's not a black and white."

Parts of "Schism" will unfold on a global stage, but the bulk of the action will occur right on Utopia and a number of X-Men will find themselves playing supporting roles in the conflict between Wolverine and Cyclops. "This is a story that will focus a lot on the kids of the X-Universe," Aaron remarked. "We'll see some of the newest mutants. The Five Lights from Generation Hope will play a large role."

The conflict in "Schism" will be brought to life by an all-star team of artists, each drawing different issue. #1 features art by Carlos Pacheco; Frank Cho is drawing #2; #3 will be brought to life by Daniel Acuna; Alan Davis provides art for issue #4; the fifth and final issue features art by Aaron's "Astonishing Spider-Man & Wolverine" collaborator, Adam Kubert. "We've got a murderer's row of talented artists," Aaron remarked. "We've got some guys who are new to the X-Universe and some who have done their fair share of Marvel projects this year. Just working with one of these artists would be great and I'm lucky enough to be working with several of them on one project!"

At its core, "Schism" examines the conflict between two veteran X-Men and the paths they believe in. Said conflict will ultimately change the way the Marvel Universe views the X-Men, and the way X-Men view themselves. "The events of 'Schism' will continue to play out in big way in the Marvel Universe going into next year. It will have a profound effect on the Marvel U going forward," Aaron explained. "Because of what happens in 'Schism,' the status quo and dynamics of the X-Men and mutantkind will change for the foreseeable future."
