X-Men: Apocalypse's Olivia Munn Reveals Psylocke Frustrations

CBR: X-Men: Apocalypse star Olivia Munn revealed some frustrations she experienced on the set of the 2016 superhero film. Specifically, Munn was irked at the fact that director Bryan Singer and screenwriter Simon Kinberg apparently didn't know a great deal about her Marvel character, Psylocke.

While participating in an "Actually Me" video for GQ, Munn was asked on social media if she was frightened by how "crazy" some fans get over film adaptations of comic books. She replied, "No, because I get like that too."

"I think that people wouldn't get so crazy if it was just a really great movie," Munn continued. "When I was doing X-Men, I was actually surprised that the director [Singer] and the writer [Kinberg] didn't even know that Psylocke had a twin brother. And I had to talk to them about a lot of different things about Psylocke and some other parts of the world that they didn't know and that, as a fan, was very frustrating."

In the events of the film, Munn's Psylocke serves as a bodyguard to Tómas Lemarquis' Caliban before being recruited by Oscar Isaac's Apocalypse as one of the villain's "Four Horsemen" alongside Magneto, Angel and Storm. The X-Men ultimately defeat Apocalypse, with Psylocke escaping amidst the chaos. The character ultimately did not return for Dark Phoenix.

If Munn's comments are anything to go on, it appears the actress wasn't particularly happy with how things played out for Psylocke was portrayed in Apocalypse. Notably, she has also had a role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, appearing as reporter Chess Roberts in Iron Man 2.

Rumor: 'Captain Britain and the Black Knight' Movie in Works From Marvel and Director Guy Ritchie

ComicBook.com: Could Marvel’s Captain Britain be headed to the big screen? A new rumor suggests it's possible, but fans may not want to get too excited.

Ain’t It Cool News reports that a source the site refers to as “Super Grip” has tipped them off to the unannounced Marvel Studios film. Captain Britain and the Black Knight would reportedly be directed by Guy Ritchie. The studio is said to be trying to take advantage of the studio vacancies created by Danny Boyle’s departure from the next James Bond movie.

"I work at various movie studios in the UK and have been situated at Pinewood for a few weeks, and I'm moving to Cardiff on a project soon. I haven't seen anything about this online anywhere, so I thought id send the info on to you: Space at Pinewood has been booked for November & December 2018 to hold auditions for a Marvel project called Captain Britain and the Black Knight. The name of the director booked in for all these dates is Guy Ritchie. Marvel seems to be moving fast with it to fill in the space left behind by Danny Boyle's aborted Bond 25. Everyone is excited because it looks like another few months of solid work when we thought we would have to wait a while."

For those unfamiliar with the character, Captain Britain is Brian Braddock. Christ Claremont, Fred Kida, and Herb Trimpe created him in 1976 for Marvel UK. Braddock was empowered by Merlyn and his daughter Roma to defend Britain. He was originally intended to appear only in the United Kingdom. Claremont later brought Captain Britain to American audiences as a member of the UK-based X-Men spinoff team Excalibur (Brian is not a mutant himself, but his twin sister Betsy, aka Psylocke, is).

Black Knight is likely referring to Dane Whitman, a Marvel Comics character created by George Tuska and Roy Thomas. Whitman comes from a family of supervillains, but chose to become a hero and joined the Avengers. Black Knight carries the mystical Ebony Blade. He has fought alongside Captain Britain due to their connections shared connection to the realm of Otherworld.

Collider: Are you currently working on X-Men: Dark Phoenix?

Olivia Munn: I don’t know what I’m supposed to say. I’m supposed to be vague. That’s my answer. I’m horrible at that. It’s like a two parter, this movie. That’s more than I’ve said, in general. I don’t know why people have to be so secretive.

What’s it been like to work with Simon Kinberg, who’s been with the franchise as a producer, but is making his directorial debut with this film?

Munn: I love Simon Kinberg. He’s such a visionary. We’re all so close. Anytime that you’re working on a project where everyone hangs out and they’re close, it’s a breeding ground for great content and a great experience. I think Simon is gonna kill it. He’s gonna do such a fantastic job with it. When I came on, he pitched me to be Psylocke, and I didn’t know him until I worked on that movie, but you see how everyone is friends and they hang out. It’s really cool! I just filmed a role in Josh Duhamel’s movie (The Buddy Games), up in Canada. He wrote, directed and is starring in it, and it’s the first film he directed and wrote. He got a bunch of his guy friends to be in the movie, and it was one of the most fun experiences. I’ve never worked on something where it’s another actor’s passion project. It’s interesting ‘cause you see how, when the director is also the writer and it’s a passion project, everybody steps up. You always try to do your best, in general, but there was a different energy. Those guys – Nick Swardson, Dax Shepard, James Roday, Dan Bakkedahl and Kevin Dillon – had me laughing the entire time. I only filmed for five days, but it was so much fun and they were so funny. Nick Swardson is one of the funniest human beings. Working with Simon, as a director, has that similar thing. It makes it more fun because everyone just steps up, a little bit more.

If you were a part of your own secret ninja group of warriors that save the day, what would you want your power or ability to be and what would your own personal mech look like?

Munn: I know it’s crazy, but I would take on Psylocke’s powers, to be able to create anything with your mind. That’s why Psylocke was always one of my favorite X-Men characters. The fact that she could create anything with her mind, but she still chooses to fight, she wants the challenge. That and/or the ability to control time. If you could control time, you’re good. And if you have the power to create anything with your mind, you could keep creating different mechs.

Olivia Munn is 'Vague' About Her 'X-Men' Return

MTV.com: Olivia Munn is psyched to return to the X-Men franchise, but she's trying to be vague about it.

After making her X-debut in last year's X-Men: Apocalypse, her involvement in the seventh X-Men installment, Dark Phoenix, has yet to be confirmed — until now. Well, kinda. While promoting The LEGO Ninjago Movie at San Diego Comic-Con, Munn was super "vague" about her X-future. That probably has something to do with the fact she couldn't remember what it was she was told she could reveal.

"I was asked what I can say, and I can't remember. I'm supposed to say things," she told MTV News correspondent Josh Horowitz. "I'll just repeat to you what was said to me in the text. It was: 'be vague.'"

Typically, if an actor is told to "be vague" about his or her involvement in a film, there's a pretty good chance that actor is in the movie. "That is a great assumption," Munn said, vaguely, of her rumored reprise in Dark Phoenix, "but I'm being vague."

It just so happens that the image is a GIF, and that GIF is done in the style of ridiculously adorable emojis. Each character has an animated emoji that shows off their mutant power as well as text that identifies them and their actor's name. This is by far the most huggable Apocalypse has ever looked.

CNET Magazine: Olivia Munn spoke with Connie Guglielmo, editor in chief of CNET News, about preferring PCs over Macs and why she’s waiting for someone to invent a Tesla-like hoverboard, and Psylocke of course.

You play Psylocke in X-Men. Why did the role appeal to you? 

Munn: I’ve loved Psylocke for so long. She’s a really, really strong badass female character in this comic book world where a lot of times the women don’t get to be strong and badass. You see a lot of superheroes [who] don’t always want to kill, and they’ll avoid it if they can. She’s never had a problem killing, and I like that she was the bad guy that had no problem being the bad guy. She’s telekinetic and telepathic so she can read your mind. She can create anything with her mind. To win any fights, she can just create a mountain and have it fall down on you, but she chooses to create a sword so she can kill up close and personal. I always thought that was really cool and badass.

Munn also shared a Psylocke quote from the upcoming X-Men: Apocalyse: "I also know there are monsters in the world. I may even be one of them." - Psylocke
