THE FLYING NEGRO said...: Not a fan of Betsy being "butched" up. Seems the writer and artist are doubling down on making Betsy and Rachel just generic lesbians. I know you can't really tell from just one slide, but this doesn't make me feel better about the character direction to be honest. Anything done by Tini Howard needs to be ERASED if Betsy or Rachel are to have a future in the comics again.

The writer needs to not lean into any of it, or the book is effectively D.O.A! Don't want lesbian fanfic, I want X-FORCE, I want to see Betsy and Rachel acting like themselves and not two random Brooklyn lesbots.

Rachel sitting with her legs cocked open, Betsy in full man drag...she is basically a man. I am a bit disappointed at Marcus To for doing this considering he did a good job keeping her feminine and looking like herself before.

Rachel... yeah, she isn't looking much girly. Then again, I'd say the way she's sitting is meant to look more like a "badass" than as "butched" up. Boom-Boom (or whatever codename she has nowadays, since she's constantly changing it) usually sits the same way and I'm pretty sure she's straight.; April 11, 2024 at 10:23 AM
Jaime Braz said...: @FSaker Betsy has tried every known outfit without letting the fabric wear her. Instead Betsy wears the clothes and marks them with her voluptuous body signature the way top models do.

I'm glad Marcus To shows appreciation to different body shapes and sizes. Not to mention him drawing Betsy with full curves is a nod to Betsy coming to terms with her body image and overcome her bulimia in the Age of X-Man reality courtesy of Leah Williams.

Styles come and go yet the most important part is to celebrate the diversity both in physical and mental form. Analyzing this preview To has achieved to depict Betsy, Tessa, Forge and Rachel with their distinctive traits.; April 11, 2024 at 11:41 AM
FSaker said...: @Jaime Braz, yes, I agree; I think she looks kinda stylish, like a top model or a fashion designer (if I'm not mistaken, Victoria Beckham - who also happens to be British - has appeared many times wearing suits and with her hair tied in a bun, and when I looked at this art, it was her style that I associated to Betsy's clothes).; April 11, 2024 at 11:50 AM

However Marcus To carried the Excalibur book with his visuals and still continues to praise the Alan Davis hourglass figure of Betsy. I miss the times in comics when artists cared about different hairstyles and body variety. Gives me hope to see new talent like To keep the old fire burning.; April 11, 2024 at 12:47 PM

As for Rachel, she was often depicted as butch save for the Reload era. And her seated position is one we’ve seen many women characters have before.
