Rick Remender On X-Force's Cast

PrettyFakes is proud to present Tim Jones’ interview with celebrated comics scribe Rick Remender, writer of Fear Agent, Uncanny X-Force, and an acclaimed recent run on Punisher, among other titles. Click on the link to read the rest of the interview!

Tim: Did you get to pick the team?

Rick Remender: No, I didn’t. They had already put the team together when I was in talks to do the book. The team was obviously why I wanted to do the book, more than anything because of my connection to Fantomex and my love for Betsy/Psylocke. Obviously Wolverine and Deadpool are a ton of fun to write and great characters. But the big juice came from what I saw in the potential for these other characters and how they would interact with the popular ones like Deadpool and Wolverine. I had some ideas that I’m getting to now to develop Deadpool into a three dimensional person where we see his motives a little more, and you start to see more of what’s going on behind the curtains. He’s the guy whose schizophrenic, he’s always wacky and making jokes, but there’s always some kind of personality issue at the core of that. For him, I imagined that he’s this guy who is refuse. He’s a failed product of Weapon X and he’s never been accepted anywhere and always sort of been the pariah. So the humor is a protective wall to shield himself and I like trying to tear that down and show the gooey human core in the middle. So there’s a lot of great character stuff with those five together. Someone told me that those were the five they were thinking, I got to work on connecting them with interpersonal dynamics.

Fraction Talks X-Books Future

CBR: On Saturday at the 2011 Emerald City Comicon, Brian Michael Bendis, Matt Fraction, Ed Brubaker and Jonathan Hickman appeared at a packed panel to discuss their plans for the Marvel U. A fan wanted to know more about the X-Men's future plans. As the team has been through so much over the past year, he was wondering what new direction the X-books could possibly take.

Fraction smiled at this and replied, "Boy, 2012 is a great year to answer that question. We have a really big idea that ate up two and a half days of our lives recently. It's the whole murder-marriage-death-birth cycle/saga, yet bigger and better and onwards and upwards."

"With all the [X-Men] storylines in the next twelve months, you'll start to see that they're all converging towards a single point. You'll see… we're getting there. Almost all the pieces are on the board."

X-Men MMXI: Year of the X-Men

Year of the X-Men: MMXI - Liveblog!

• As for the incoming "X-Men Prelude" series, writer Paul Jenkins will bring his own voice to the lead in to the next X-event. He's digging into the four main X-Dudes: Xavier, Magneto, Cyclops and Wolverine and each of their point of views. It really focuses on Cyclops and how everyone sees him.

• The books will dig into why Cyclops is the leader of mutants while also revealing new details about the past of each of the other characters.

• "X-Men Prelude" will have the full title "X-Men: Prelude to Schism" – news that came with a new teaser by Greg Land. It appears likely that "Schism" is the title of the incoming event.

• Classic villains return soon in the pages of "X-Men" as well as other places, and to keep fans interested, the editor said "Hellfire" will be a major key in 2011.

• Hellion continues to appear in "Age of X" and "X-Men Legacy".

• Sage won't be showing up in X-Men for a while. She's still dancing out in the multiverse.

• Domino is in "Age of X" in a minor role, but not too many plans lie ahead for her in the future.

• Elixir is still out in Genosha/Necrosha, and he won't be returning to Utopia in the future.

• Lockheed will play a large role in the Storm/Kitty/Beast thread of "Astonishing X-Men".

• Pixie will remain in the X-books but not in a major way for the next six months.

• Mystique continues her core role in Jason Aaron's "Wolverine" series.

• Prodigy has nothing major coming up, but he will appear in the "Uncanny X-Men" Annual.

Marvel Vs Capcom 3 DLC Poll Update

IMPORTANT UPDATE: Ms. Marvel is very close to Psylocke, and we only have one day left to vote. Do not let Ms. Marvel come any more closer! Psylocke needs to be the most requested female character! If you have already voted, ask your friends to vote for Psylocke! It's easy and quick to register if you use your Google or Facebook accounts!

Capcom-Unity.com has released a new poll today focusing only on the top voted/requested characters.

For Psylocke to win, do not vote for her competition which are the following characters: Dr. Strange, Carnage, Cyclops, Gambit, Ghost Rider, and Ms. Marvel. You can vote for whichever Capcom characters you desire since they aren't competing with Psylocke for a DLC spot.

UPDATE: On Ask Capcom Live, Snow mentioned to Sven about the survey/poll & they ARE aware of them, they're listening to your opinions, & it might have an impact on future DLC characters.

X-Men MMXI: Uncanny X-Men

• Juggernaut is the thing that comes hammering at the X-Men's door during Fear Itself. He disrupts the peaceful state the X-Men have established in San Francisco.

• The tagline with the image says a lot. Colossus seems overly happy to sacrifice something. Colossus is a character to watch in 2011.

• Illyana has done a lot of bad things in the past, and she'll play a role in the Fear Itself arc.

• Readers should pay attention to the characters of Generation Hope. Two of them are central to the next big x-event, and one of them will be a huge player in a huge Marvel event sometime in the next sixteen months.

• "Breakin Point" is primarily about Colossus and Kitty, with more Magneto than you might expect. Fear Itself is about Namor/Emma/Scott and Kitty/Colossus/Illyana.

• There's a Wolverine/Hope one-off issue that takes place between the Breakworld arc and the Fear Itself arc.

• Magneto feels that Cyclops has done something he and Xavier never did, in saving the mutants. He's Cyclops' most fanatical follower--but who would believe that? Everyone is so distrusting of Magneto. He's also at the center of Kieron's first solo issue, #534.1.

• Jean Grey is dead. Hope is not Jean Grey. She's got red hair, green eyes, and fire power, but take from that what you will.

• Kitty has an important role to play in the next several issues of Generation Hope.

• Carlos Pacheco is drawing 534.1, Terry Dodson comes on for four issue Breaking Point arc, then a one-issue story drawn by someone else they're not prepared to announce, then Greg Land draws the Fear Itself arc.

X-Men MMXI: X-Men Legacy

X-Men Legacy: MMXI - Liveblog!

• After Age of X, X-Men Legacy will still be Rogue-centric, but it will be a little bit more of a team book. For at least the next 7 or 8 months, she'll be leading a team that will be dealing with the fallout of Age of X as well as other new threats

• Rogue's team is made up of a number of characters that have been weaving in and out of Legacy for a while now. Most of the team members will be around in the book for quite some time to come.

• Going into issue #250, Rafa Sandoval is joining the book as its new artist. Clay Mann will still be drawing the book as well.

• There's fall out after Age of X ends, both for individual characters and for the book.

• The arc that begins at 250 has quite a rogues gallery of villains who are all completely new. They all have something in common that makes it different from most X-villains. The team has to fight their way through them to get to their leader, Styx. The arc is called The Orpheus Effect.

• The arc following that isn't set on earth, paying off something they've only begun to set up in the very background.

• There are some very interesting and loaded relationships in the group, beginning with Professor X and Magneto; Professor X and Legion; and Rogue's relationships with both Gambit and Magneto. There's also some past history between Gambit and Frenzy.

• Rogue's role [as a mentor to the kids] is up for grabs, since she's leaving Utopia for quite some time. They'll be coming back to some characters later on, though.

• Gambit's role will be kicking ass, taking names. His death persona will be addressed.

• Iceman is a character to watch at the end of 2011.

• Issue #250 is oversized with a Rogue-centric backup.

X-Men MMXI: Uncanny X-Force

Uncanny X-Force: MMXI - Liveblog!

• X-Force will indeed be going to the Age of Apocalypse. This trip will be connected to the first two arcs of the series. It will have huge ramifications for the Marvel Universe.

•
There is somebody in the Age of Apocalypse that X-Force needs for some reason.

• Archangel is not there [in the teaser] for a reason, and it's a reason you don't expect. Remender also said that they're looking for a natural way to expand the team membership. "While there are some new members coming up, I don't think people will see it coming.

• There will be drama about AOA Nightcrawler and how these guys are seeing another version of their recently deceased friend. Ditto how Wolverine deals with AOA Jean Grey.

• As far as where in the AOA chronology this takes place, without giving anything away, it's roughly a decade following the Age of Apocalypse mini that came out in 2005.

• Mark Brooks will be kicking off the Age of Apocalypse arc with Jerome Opena batting cleanup. Esad Ribic will also continue to pitch in, as will Billy Tan and Greg Tocchini upcoming.

• The version of Apocalypse we know is dead. Rick is building on the "mythology of Apocalypse" from the Clan Akkaba to the Dark Riders to the Age of Apocalypse, etc.

• A thing that really resonates with Uncanny X-Force is that their actions do have consequences. They killed Apocalypse. He is dead. Will he ever come back? Who knows. But that happened and it mattered.

• Rick takes addressing X-Force's kills very seriously. There are ethical issues and there are consequences.

• Dark Beast plays a sizable role in the next year of X-Force.

• Fantomex is pining for Betsy, but she and Warren are very happy at the moment. however, their relationship is also very parasitic with him needing her to keep Archangel at bay. That line between love and dependence can be complicated. There's definitely something happening with Fantomex, but the real meat is the complications between Warren and Betsy. That will be big coming up.

• Rick Remender wanted to explore the duality in terms of Betsy's brothers, with shining super hero Brian and psycho villain Jamie. Betsy falls in the middle. She doesn't measure up to Brian but hasn't lost herself as much as Jamie. They play a role in defining her and I wanted to make sure they were included and dealt with.

• From what Rick Remender just said, he's definitely a big fan of Psylocke and the entire Braddock family, not to mention her complex relationships with Archangel and even Fantomex, so expect big things!

• A poll conducted during the liveblog asked "Who is your favorite current member of X-Force?" Psylocke won with 26% of the votes, followed by Fantomex (23%), Deadpool (18%), Archangel (17%) and Wolverine (16%).
