X-Men: The Days of Second Coming // Part 10

Source: IGN
13. Wolverine

The Road to Second Coming: Wolverine's past mistakes and misdeeds have, if nothing else, taught him the full value of human life. Cyclops is willing to sacrifice almost anything for what he sees as the greater good. Wolverine simply wants to prevent more death and destruction. These two close friends may find themselves on opposite ends of the coming conflict.

Chris Yost: "Wolverine is one of the few X-Men who has seen Hope since her escape into the future. And seeing her, it made Logan doubt that sending her off with Cable was the right move. Wolverine and Cyclops have always had a rough relationship, and it's only gotten rougher due to X-Force... but things are about to get as personal as they've ever gotten."

12. Magneto

The Road to Second Coming: Faced with no other options, Magneto is resorting to desperate measure to win the X-Men's allegiance. The Master of Magnetism is gathering every ounce of his strength in order to bring Kitty Pryde back from the depths of space. He may very well succeed, but the physical toll will likely be tremendous. Will his sacrifice be worth it? And if the X-Men do accept him into the fold, will they just be inviting further disaster down the road?

Matt Fraction: "He hopes [to win the trust of the X-Men]. That was the plan. I think it goes a long way towards relaxing people who are waiting for the knife to come out or the mask to come off. It's a great good will gesture and it goes a long way to starting to rebuild a meaningful trust."

11. Cannonball

The Road to Second Coming: Cannonball's early missions with the New Mutants haven't always gone smoothly, but the young leader has made good on his promise to keep his teammates alive. Cyclops is willing to sacrifice hi ideals and the moral high ground for what he sees as the greater good. Is Cannonball willing to do the same? Will his own desire to protect his friends be put aside when those same friends put their lives on the line for Hope?

Zeb Wells: "Sam is a soldier and has been an X-Man long enough to know what that means. Cyclops is in charge and he will follow his orders and see that his team does the same. Whether or not he thinks Hope is mutantkind's last chance is not as important as what Scott Summers thinks."

1O. X-Factor

The Road to Second Coming: Though repairing their ties with the X-Men, X-Factor nonetheless decided to return to the streets of new York. But before they left, Layla Miller imparted some of her knowledge of the future to Cyclops. Layla is utterly convinced Cyclops will fail in his aim to save his people. For the steadfast mutant leader, this has been one of the hardest blows to his faith in Hope. Luckily, when the chips are down Cyclops may find that not all members of X-Factor are so unwilling to fight.

Peter David: "Even though Madrox and X-Factor aren't involving themselves in what the X-Men have to deal with, nevertheless they have people who are out to get them simply because they're mutants. This development allows us to acknowledge what's going on in Second Coming without it seeming wedged into the book."

O9. Namor

The Road to Second Coming: The proud and haughty monarch is less than willing to take orders from Cyclops. He has already shown a habit of making secret bargains with Magneto, perhaps the only man on Utopia less trusted than Namor. But whatever front he puts up, Namor knows deep down that he and his people need the X-Men's help.

Nick Lowe: "He's got to deal with the fact that he's a mutant and, frankly, facing a threat of extinction unlike any he's ever seen. This isn't good. Namor doesn't really care much about Hope, to be honest. Sure he hopes she can help these people, but it's not really his problem to solve, if that makes sense."

O8. X-Force

The Road to Second Coming: So far, X-Force has managed to safeguard their existence from the rest of the X-Men. This isn't likely to last much longer, however. Beast has already departed Utopia in part because of his disgust at the thought of a team of mutant executioners. If he isn't careful, Cyclops could lose the support of both factions just as the X-Men's need for X-Force becomes greater than ever.

Chris Yost: "After the Necrosha attacks, X-Force is half of what it was. And the team has gotten a lot darker. But all secrets come to light eventually, and Cyclops is prepared to do whatever it takes to get Hope home... even if it tarnishes him forever."

O7. Magik

The Road to Second Coming: Perhaps more than any X-Man, Illyana has little reason to care about Hope's fate or to believe her return means better days for mutantkind. Illyana has seen the worst the universe has to offer and hasn't necessarily been changed for the better because of it. But if Cyclops begins to lose support, Illyana will likely be among the first to stray from the path.

Zeb Wells: "She'll go wherever Cyclops or Cannonball tell her to because she'll need their help in the future. The politics of the X-Men or the idea of Hope as a mutant messiah interest her very little."

O5. Nightcrawler

The Road to Second Coming: If Cyclops has more faith than anyone that Hope will save the mutant race, Nightcrawler is a close second. Like many of his teammates, Nightcrawler probably won't be happy to learn about the dark choices Cyclops has made in the past year. The real question is whether his faith in Hope is tied to his faith in Cyclops.

Matt Fraction: "What happens when he discovers the lengths and depths to which Scott has gone and sank to make it possible? Would Nightcrawler abide by all of the decisions Scott made if he knew what those decisions were?"

O6. Psylocke

Aliases: Elizabeth Braddock, Kwannon, Captain Britain, Lady Mandarin
First Appearance: Captain Britain Vol. 1 #8 (1976)
Basic Powers: Psylocke has both telepathic and telekinetic abilities. Because of her training as a ninja, sh most often manifests these abilities in the form of a psychic dagger that can incapacitate victims.

Did You Know: Betsy is an English-born woman and the sister of Captain Britain. However, her body was switched with that of an Asian assassin named Kwannon. Psylocke has generally remained in this new body ever since.

The Road to Second Coming: Recent years have been even more chaotic for Psylocke than the rest of her teammates. She died in Spain in an attempt to protect her fellow teammates from a villain named Vargas. She was then resurrected one year later. Then she was recruited by the Exiles in their continual quest to protect the Omniverse. In the midst of this newest mission, she was plucked back into her normal reality by Madelyne Pryor and the Sisterhood of Mutants.

After traveling across universes and through life and death itself, Psylocke is understandably confused and adrift. Adjusting to life as an X-Man has proven difficult for Betsy. Even a simple journey to Japan to re-inter the body of Kwannon proved more complicated than expected.

After battling The Hand and Selene's techno-organic slaves, Betsy has proven she is every bit the warrior she ever was. These recent battles have at least helped her assimilate back into the fold of the X-Men. But much like Kitty Pryde, Psylocke was absent when the conflict over Hope began. When Hope returns, Psylocke will have to decide who and what she fights for, and whether she has the same faith in the fate of the mutant race as some of her comrades.

On Psylocke's place in the X-Men:
Matt Fraction: "She hardly knows who she is let alone what her role is now that she's back. This is a catastrophe and a cataclysm, and coming out of it where she is coming out of it shapes the beginning of the next chapter of her life."

On adjusting to her return:
Matt Fraction: "It would be an adjustment for anybody. She's just barely gotten her sea legs and now the boat's under attack."

On the Colossus/Nightcrawler/Psylocke partnership:
Nick Lowe: "Three friends who are pushed into a tough situation and will be made stronger by it."
