The Ultimate Fan Poll Results: 50 Years of Betsy Braddock

Betsy Braddock • 50th Anniversary

50 Years of Betsy Braddock — The Poll Results

When discussing Betsy Braddock and the challenge of finding the right direction for her, X-Office Senior Editor Tom Brevoort once observed that even Betsy fans themselves can be divided over which version of the character they want to see.

With Betsy celebrating her 50th anniversary, we thought this was the perfect opportunity to see what a wider section of the fandom had to say.

Across 12 categories, fans cast a combined total of 10,779 votes covering virtually every aspect of Betsy’s history. And while no poll can speak for every reader, the results revealed a remarkable amount of common ground.

To reach as broad and diverse an audience as possible, the polls were shared not only here on the blog, but also by Psylocke - Captain Britain, the largest Betsy-dedicated Facebook page with more than 17,000 followers, and Betsy Braddock, the largest Betsy-focused Instagram page with more than 7,000 followers.

A huge thank you to both pages for their support and cooperation in helping this project reach Betsy fans across different platforms and parts of the world.

So, after 50 years of stories, transformations, costumes, relationships, teams and identities, what does the fandom consider the very best of Betsy Braddock?

Let’s find out.

The Making of Betsy Braddock

We begin with the elements at the heart of Betsy’s identity: what fans want to call her, how they most enjoy seeing her, and which of her many abilities they consider the most iconic.

01

Codename

Codename poll results

There was very little ambiguity here. Psylocke won by an enormous margin, receiving more than two-thirds of all votes cast in the category. Captain Britain finished a distant second, while the newly announced Butterfly made an impressive debut in third place despite being added as an option only 24 days after the poll had already opened.

Perhaps more than any other result, this one shows how strongly the name Psylocke remains associated with Betsy Braddock. She has carried several titles and identities over five decades, but for most voters, one codename continues to define her above all others.

02

Costume

Costume poll results

And here we have the great exception to all those decisive victories.

Mahmud Asrar’s Disassembled design narrowly defeated Arthur Adams’ Outback Armor after the two spent virtually the entire poll fighting for first place. The difference between them was only four votes.

It is an especially interesting pairing. One represents Betsy shortly before the body swap, while the other represents her after returning to her original body decades later. In very different ways, both designs preserve something recognizably and distinctly Betsy without relying on the classic ninja costume, which nevertheless remained extremely popular and finished comfortably in third place.

Of all 12 categories, this was by far the closest race.

03

Power

Power poll results

The Butterfly Effect took first place, ahead of the Psychic Knife and Psycho-Blast.

That result feels particularly fitting. Betsy has accumulated an enormous range of telepathic, telekinetic and even magical abilities over the years, but the psychic butterfly has remained her most instantly recognizable visual signature. It transcends costumes, bodies, teams and eras — and for many fans, seeing that butterfly is enough to immediately know who is on the page.

The Psychic Knife taking second place is particularly telling. Betsy has used it only very rarely since returning to her original body, yet it remains an enduring fan favorite and one of the abilities most strongly associated with her.

The Stories

With Betsy herself established, the next question is where fans believe she has worked best: which period of her history, which team environment, and which story represent her at her strongest.

04

Era

Era poll results

The X-Men Recruit & Outback Years took first place, followed by the Utopia, Uncanny X-Force & Regenesis period and the Ninja Assassin & Blue Team era.

The Outback years represent the period in which Betsy truly established herself as an X-Man, building relationships, personality traits and dynamics that continue to define her decades later.

The second-place Utopia, Uncanny X-Force & Regenesis era gave Betsy a major new lease on life. Her role in Uncanny X-Force pushed her into darker, more complex territory and helped ignite the character’s major renaissance throughout the 2010s, when Betsy once again became a constant presence across the X-Men line.

And the Ninja Assassin & Blue Team years represent another kind of turning point entirely: the period in which Psylocke became part of the enormous early-'90s X-Men boom in popular culture, transforming her into one of the franchise’s most recognizable characters worldwide.

05

Team

Team poll results

The Australian Outback X-Men also claimed the Team category, giving that period another major victory.

It is easy to understand why. That lineup had a particularly strong and unique dynamic, with characters whose personalities complemented one another in ways that made the group feel like much more than simply a collection of popular X-Men. It was also during this period that Betsy developed relationships that still matter to her today, including her bonds with Storm, Wolverine, Rogue, Dazzler and Colossus.

Wolverine’s Uncanny X-Force came second, while the iconic Blue Team rounded out the Top 3, once again reinforcing the three major periods that repeatedly emerged throughout these results.

06

Story or Story Arc

Story or Story Arc poll results

The Dark Angel Saga emerged as the clear favorite Betsy story, followed by her confrontation with Sabretooth during Mutant Massacre.

It is notable that the winning story comes from Uncanny X-Force, while much of the rest of the Top 10 spans several completely different periods of Betsy’s history. From the Siege Perilous and Lady Mandarin to Matsu’o, Magneto and Disassembled, fans selected stories from across decades rather than concentrating exclusively on one incarnation of the character.

The Dark Angel Saga, however, stood above them all — a story that placed Betsy at the center of an emotionally difficult conflict involving love, morality, sacrifice and Warren Worthington.

Friends & Relationships

Betsy’s history is also defined by the people closest to her. These next two categories look at the friendships and romances that voters feel have mattered most.

07

Friendship

Friendship poll results

Storm won the Friendship poll by a substantial margin, with Wolverine and Dazzler completing the Top 3.

Storm and Betsy have shared decades of history as teammates, leaders and veteran X-Men, and their relationship has often been characterized by mutual respect and trust. Wolverine’s second-place finish similarly reflects a friendship that stretches across several important periods of Betsy’s life, while Dazzler’s third-place finish highlights another enduring bond dating back to the Outback era.

The rest of the ranking also strongly reflects Betsy’s history with the wider X-Men family, with Colossus, Rogue, Nightcrawler, Jubilee, Jean Grey and Beast all making the Top 10 alongside her brother Brian.

08

Relationship

Relationship poll results

If there was one result that could truly be called a landslide, this was it.

Archangel received more than half of all votes cast in the category, finishing enormously ahead of every other romantic interest. Rachel Summers placed second, followed by Fantomex.

Warren and Betsy’s relationship has existed across multiple decades, writers and eras, evolving from romance and separation to tragedy, reunion and lasting emotional connection. Their history during Uncanny X-Force in particular remains one of the most important chapters for both characters.

Whatever different romances Betsy has experienced over the years, the voters left very little doubt about which one they consider her defining relationship.

Rivals & Villains

Not every important relationship in Betsy’s life is friendly — or completely hostile.

Frenemy: For the purposes of this poll, the term referred broadly to characters with whom Betsy has a complicated or uneasy relationship: people she may respect while frequently clashing with, people she tends to bicker with, or simply characters she finds particularly annoying. They are not necessarily villains or genuine enemies — just people whose interactions with Betsy are rarely completely peaceful.
09

Frenemy

Frenemy poll results

Unsurprisingly, Kwannon took first place.

Few characters could better embody the idea of a complicated relationship in Betsy’s history. Their lives became inseparably intertwined through the body swap, with identity, memory, trauma and resentment connecting them long before they were ever able to meet properly as two separate women.

Emma Frost and Magneto followed in second and third, two characters whose interactions with Betsy have similarly ranged between cooperation, disagreement, mutual respect and outright hostility depending on the circumstances.

And then, of course, there is Jamie Braddock — because sometimes your most exhausting frenemy is your own brother.

10

Villain

Villain poll results

Shadow King emerged as Betsy’s favorite villain, followed by Spiral and Sabretooth.

It is an especially appropriate Top 3. All three have challenged Betsy in ways that became deeply personal: Shadow King through psychic warfare and violation, Spiral through the transformation that permanently altered the course of Betsy and Kwannon’s lives, and Sabretooth through some of Betsy’s most memorable physical confrontations.

Matsu’o, Mojo, Slaymaster and the Reavers also rank highly, resulting in a list that spans virtually Betsy’s entire publication history — from her earliest British adventures to some of the most defining moments of her X-Men career.

The Creators

Finally, none of those stories, relationships, powers or visual identities would exist without the creators behind them. The last two categories celebrate the writers and artists who fans believe have made the greatest contribution to Betsy Braddock.

11

Writer

Writer poll results

Chris Claremont won the Writer category by a commanding margin, with Rick Remender in second place and Christopher Yost in third.

Claremont created Betsy Braddock in 1976, although he initially wrote her only briefly before the character underwent major development under Alan Moore and Alan Davis in the British Captain Britain stories. Years later, Claremont brought her into the X-Men universe and reshaped her into the character generations of readers came to know — establishing her as an X-Man, deepening her personality and relationships, and eventually overseeing her transformation into Psylocke.

Remender’s strong second-place finish reflects the enormous influence of Uncanny X-Force on modern perceptions of Betsy and the renaissance the character experienced during the 2010s.

Christopher Yost, meanwhile, is particularly associated with the 2009 Psylocke miniseries, which gave Betsy a rare solo spotlight and revisited one of the most personal chapters of her history. His placement feels especially timely now that he is returning to write Betsy again in the upcoming Maximum X-Men.

12

Artist

Artist poll results

Jim Lee took first place among Betsy’s artists, followed by Alan Davis and Marc Silvestri.

These three names represent three hugely important visual chapters in Betsy’s history. Davis played a major role in defining Betsy’s original British appearance, while Silvestri was the principal artist during the Australian Outback period and helped visually define the era in which Betsy truly cemented her place among the X-Men. Lee, of course, brought the ninja-era Psylocke to life in the visual style that became one of the most recognizable images in X-Men history.

The rest of the Top 10 spans generations of artists, from Joe Madureira and Salvador Larroca to Kris Anka, Marcus To and Jerome Opeña — a reminder that Betsy has received memorable visual interpretations throughout virtually every era of her publication history.

So, are Betsy Braddock fans really “all over the road”?

There are certainly differences of opinion — as there should be after 50 years of stories and so many radically different chapters in one character’s history.

But across 10,779 votes, the broader picture was surprisingly consistent.

Fans repeatedly gravitated toward the Outback era, while also showing enormous affection for Uncanny X-Force. They overwhelmingly chose Psylocke as Betsy’s defining codename, the psychic butterfly as her signature power, Storm as her closest friendship, Archangel as her defining romance, Kwannon as her ultimate frenemy and the Shadow King as her greatest villain. And when it came to the creators who shaped her, Chris Claremont and Jim Lee stood comfortably at the top.

Rather than pointing toward one single version of Betsy frozen at one moment in time, the results seem to favor a character whose best qualities come from several chapters of her history.

After 50 years, fans may disagree on the details, but they seem to agree on far more about Betsy Braddock than anyone might have expected.

Here’s to the next 50 years. A new era begins with Maximum X-Men #1, out December 2, 2026. In exactly one month, Betsy Braddock will be back.
