Kieron Gillen Talks Psylocke + Previews

• from Kieron Gillen's formspring:

On the cover for Uncanny X-Men #5:[Betsy is fighting] a big ol' batty thing! I've actually mentioned in a couple of interviews where the second arc would be set. If I'd actually noticed they were showing that image behind me in the panel, I'd have probably have mentioned it there as well. I've said in other interviews it takes the team to a newly introduced environment. With Betsy on the cover, there's enough clues there for you to work it out.

Gillen had mentioned previously on a X-Position that “the second arc involves a setting that you may be familiar with from "X-Force," which takes a more rescue/exploration approach. It's less a threat and more a problem for the team to deal with -- which, at the same time, introduces new villains which act as distorted mirrors to the team (as in, following the above philosophy).”

On Psylocke's position after Schism:Psylocke's position sort of evolved due to a mass of stuff, not all of which I can talk about yet.” Gillen also added that “she's in a very interesting place post-Regenesis. And a particularly tiring one.

NYCC 2011: X-Men Regenesis Panel

X-Men: Legacy new creative team is writer Christos Gage and artist David Baldeon. The book will have Rogue, Gambit, Rachel Grey and Frenzy as teachers and defenders of the Jean Grey School for Higher Learning.

Wolverine & the X-Men: Alpha & Omega, written by Brian Wood, is a five-issue miniseries with art from Mark Brooks and Roland Boschi. It stars Wolverine and Kid Omega, Quentin Quire in a clash for dominance of the newly formed Jean Grey School for Higher Learning.

Uncanny X-Men, written by Kieron Gillen, is about the X-Men operating on a scale we've never seen them operate on before. They are trying to be the "premier superhero team." Psylocke graces the cover for Uncanny X-Men #5.

X-Factor, written by Peter David, will see Wolverine having a proposition to the team which leads to Havok and Polaris joining X-Factor.

Uncanny X-Force, written by Rick Remender, will see very big stuff coming up. In X-Force and Secret Avengers, the threats and the things that they're dealing with are intersecting in ways that they're not aware of yet. Naturally, though, things may collided together.

Age of Apocalypse by David Lapham and Roberto De La Torre is a new ongoing series and starts in May 2012. It launches directly out of the events of the Dark Angel Saga.

Generation Hope, written by James Asmus, will have the "hormones and kissing" you'd hope to see in a teen book. The team is sticking with their mission. Sebastian Shaw was mindwiped and left off the map. Once the team sees a signature that is unaccounted for, they're going to go after it thinking it's a new mutant, only to find out that it's Sebastian Shaw.

X-Men, written by Victor Gischler, will check in on the status of Jubilee.

Astonishing X-Men, written by Greg Pak, is a book where you are going to se some major emotional repercussions coming off of Schism, Cyclops and Storm in particular. Some characters who might not meet up in any other books will be interacting in interesting ways in Astonishing.

Wolverine and The X-Men, written by Jason Aaron, will have Wolverine playing the role of Professor X. There's a Danger Room, but it's not the Danger Room we've seen before. There are classes, but not like we've seen before. It's a complete mix of characters.

New Mutants, written by Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning, is not strictly a mutant team. They have an extraterrestrial member, and a former mutant human.

NYCC 2011: Rick Remender Joins "Secret Avengers"

Newsarama: Change is coming to Secret Avengers — as in, new writer, new artist and new cast type of change. Come Secret Avengers #21.1, Uncanny X-Force and Venom writer Rick Remender takes over from Warren Ellis. As of February's Secret Avengers #22, artist Gabriel Hardman (Hulk) comes on board. Captain Britain is one of the new members and Remender shares some insight on X-Force's upcoming Otherworld arc. Check it out:

Newsarama: Captain Britain is also joining the cast. The female Captain Britain was in the Avengers around 2003, but this is Brian Braddock's first time in the Avengers, right?

Rick Remender: Yeah, it is. He was invited in the Age of Heroes special by Cap to join the team. In the meantime, Captain Britain has left MI:13, and Merlin is missing from Otherworld. Otherworld, with the Starlight Citadel, contains a tower that has a doorway to every dimension in the Marvel Universe. Alan Moore created that, and that's where the 616 comes from, and I really like the idea. Captain Britain and the Captain Britain Corps have been revived, and he's back in Otherworld, and running the show there, and taking a bigger role in the protection of not just Earth, but the Multiverse.

Those are reasons that Cap wanted him on the squad, given that one of the things we'll be dealing with are not only international threats that need to be handled with care, but interdimensional threats. This needs to be big and sci-fi to keep me excited. That's one of the reasons that he was brought in, as well as a connection to The Descendants. I wanted to make sure that any character that was brought in fit the story and had a reason for being there. As we went through the story, I found natural connective tissues, especially given the Captain Britain in Otherworld story I'm telling in X-Force from issues #20-#23. This all interconnects. I can't help but connect dots when I'm writing. Captain Britain is playing not only a power role, but he's got a lot of specific reasons for being on the squad.

Uncanny X-Force #16 Spoilers

Spoilers from X-Man's Comic Blog: (Check X-Man's blog for a review and a scan of the issue!) While Archangel is putting the finishing touches on destroying all life on Earth and restarting evolution again with himself and his Dark Riders as gods, Fantomex, Deadpool and Deathlok have managed to infiltrate Archangel's base of operations. Fantomex directs Deathlok to destroy the World so Arc
hangel couldn't use it's powers to carry out his plans, while he took Deadpool to hunt down and deal with Archangel. While that's going on, Famine manages to escape from EVA and heads towards Archangel's stronghold to warn his master of the invaders. The Age of Apocalypse version of the Blob(!!) attacks Deadpool and Fantomex, and we learn he was brought to this dimension by Dark Beast to assist with Archangel's plans. AOA Blob sits on Fantomex and manages to deflect all of Deadpool's bullets. Before AOA Blob can finish off either X-Force member, Famine uses his powers to kill AOA Blob at the behest of Wolverine, who had followed him from EVA. Once Blob is taken care of, Wolverine chops off Famine's hands and boots him off of a rooftop. Meanwhile, Archangel, who is sounding more and more like Apocalypse, collects the captive Psylocke to have her witness the end of the Earth and it's rebirth. Psylocke is still holding out hope that she can reach Warren Worthington, but is soon contacted by Wolverine telepathically and told that Archangel's plans were moving too quickly and that if she had an opportunity to take Warren out, she had to take it. The first Famine, Genocide's mother, arrives at this moment with a gun and threatens to shoot Archangel because of what he'd turned Genocide into. Archangel casually murders her, which finally helps Psylocke realize that she had to stop Archangel. Psylocke lunges for Famine's gun and fire a shot at Archangel, but he dodges and knocks her unconscious. As for Deadpool and Fantomex, they are attacked by AOA Iceman, who has seemingly turned evil. AOA Iceman freezes Deadpool and shatters him into dozens of pieces(!), which leads to Fantomex hopping into EVA and apparently quitting the battle, much to Wolverine's disgust. On the World, Dark Beast is directing Genocide on what to do to wipe the Earth clean, but is confronted by Deathlok, who is immediately stopped by War. Wolverine attacks AOA Iceman, and this issue concludes with Archangel taking Psylocke to his private chambers to bond her with the Death Seed, thus turning her into his personal Death.

Kieron Gillen on "Uncanny X-Men" Comings and Goings

Newsarama: Kieron, the last time you spoke with Newsarama about Regenesis, it was before the team lineups were revealed. Now that we've got a much clearer idea of who's on what side, it looks it's actually going to be a pretty smooth transition for Uncanny, as main cast post-Schism appears to be pretty much the same as it was pre-Schism — Cyclops, Emma Frost, Namor, Colossus, Illyana. Is there anyone you're giving up that you're going to miss — Wolverine being the obvious candidate? Or any new characters coming into the fold you're eager to explore?

Kieron Gillen: Yeah, I'll miss Logan. Which is a little surprising for me. When I took on Uncanny, part of me was thinking "have I anything to say with Logan? He's a character who's appeared in so many comics, etc". But the second I started writing him, it became clear why he had been in so many comics. He's just a compelling character with both a core power and flexibility. And I will never get tired of earning money for writing "Snikt!". So, I'll miss that.

I miss Iceman, having enjoyed all the times I've written him (briefer than I liked — though he's prominent in the last issue of Uncanny). I would have liked to have had a chance to write Rachel more (I briefly had a chance in Generation Hope #10). Beast wasn't around, but I always like writing him. And Kitty. I'll miss Kitty, though I suspect with the grinder I put her through in my issues, she'd be glad to see the back of me.

But to be honest, I'm fine with them all. It's really about the story. Those characters don't really fit where Uncanny X-Men will be in issue #1. If I had them, I wouldn't know what to do with them.

In terms of additions to my core team, Storm is the big one. She's a character who hasn't quite been in the spotlight as much as her status would suggest, and I'm looking forward to putting her through her paces. And Psylocke's position post-Regenesis is interesting. I can't say any more. But I find it very interesting.

Kieron Gillen Talks 'Uncanny'

Marvel.com asks Kieron Gillen about the selection process for his team and Cyclops' side in general, to which he answers:

“It's just a question of writing. A lot of characters logically went to one camp or another. As much as I love Beast or Kitty, there’s no natural or convincing way that they'd end up on my side. Psylocke, on the other hand, we talked over carefully. Her position: complicated, to say the least. I think we've left her in an interesting position.” Thanks FSaker for the heads up. :)
