Tini Howards Talks "Excalibur" and "Knights of X"

The Scorpio Room: It’s the spiritual and literal successor to Excalibur. It’s all Otherworld, all the time. It’s got girls, gays, Bei, and more than a few Saturday Morning Cartoon vibes. It’s that classic X-Men story of a world that hates and fears mutants… in a fantastic whole new way. It’s Bob Quinn and Tini Howard’s Knights of X.

If you followed Marcus To and I’s work on Excalibur, you saw that the team glided our twenty-sixth and final issue to an incredible landing. I cannot thank this amazing team enough - Erick Arciniega on colors, Ariana Maher on letters, and the whole editorial team. Mahmud Asrar on 26 gorgeous covers and one hell of a mass battle issue. R.B. Silva, Phil Noto, and Wilton Santos on some stunning guest issues. One (hopefully two?) beautiful hardcover(s) and an event.

(A special shoutout to one of the hidden magic ingredients in Excalibur - editor of our first 24 issues Annalise Bissa. When Annalise switched offices it felt like a mighty harpoon tore its way into my side. Thankfully Sarah Brunstad and Anita Okoye are mighty editors themselves and we didn’t skip a beat, but I can’t emphasize enough how much of the first 24 issues and X of Swords were the result of Annalise’s brilliance. I hope to work with her again.)

To say that I wrote this book during unprecedented times is something of a bad joke by this point. I don’t know if I’ll ever again experience a creative process quite like I have in the X-Office - and that would have been the case even without the pandemic. We were given incredible runway, unprecedented space and trust to spread out and build a society. We were given a whole new way to try and make superhero comics, and it worked. I wanted to build an X-Men story built on crazy things like Alan Moore essays and anthropological ideas about magic and we fucking did it.

Thankfully, blessedly, I got to spend a lot of time in physical rooms with the rest of the Krakoan writers. Eating snacks, tossing ideas around, and of course - griping about having to work the whole time - I now absolutely miss those days and would sustain a (pellet) gunshot wound (to a delicate area, sure) to be able to have one of those days again.

I miss bumping knees with Vita under the table to encourage one another to speak, and Leah spending an hour doodling a joke to silently share with the table like an analog meme. I miss Ben and Al’s sonorous and serious pitches, like holy sermons. I miss Gerry’s laptop stickers, because they gave me a sense of comfort when I first walked into the room. I miss the way Jon eats a box of cereal like a bag of chips. I miss Jordan’s collection of X-Men t-shirts. I miss Zeb. I miss my editors. I miss the omelet chef. I hate that with some of these brilliant folks, like Victor, Si, and Kieron, I’ve only ever gotten to have these conversations over Zoom. I miss the way that when you’re in a room with someone who you creatively respect and adore, the energy of having them respond to your ideas is like nothing else in the world.

Excalibur survived (thrived!) through a first arc, and shortly into planning the second, we were able to begin planning our first DAWN OF X event, which I was asked to co-lead with Jon.

Meanwhile, our own society, out in the real world, was changing rapidly. According to my emails, I was invited into the room in November 2018: pre-release of HoX/PoX. Pre-2020 election cycle and all that followed. Pre-COVID. In that time, the concept of the X-Office went from a meeting in New York City with some of my favorite writers that I was very, very nervous about screwing up, to a tight knit Slack channel of some people who were fast becoming my close friends, people I spoke to every day.

We checked in about almost everything - COVID scares, bad days, or even - and sometimes this was the most vital - a safe space to say ‘it’s okay to check out of reality for a bit and come play pretend.’ In that Slack, we built our own Mutant Dream House of ideas and stories and interconnected narratives. We played. It kept me sane.

Oh, and we worked. A ton.

Specifically in the form of a 22 chapter all-hands-on-deck event, the first of the Dawn of X era, called X of Swords. Jon and I brought our shared story of Apocalypse to an incredible…end, I guess. I wrote dozens of pages of prose material (some of which made it in as datapages), drew maps, spent time on the phone, worked in time-zone driven shifts and really, mostly, just stayed inside and hunkered down through this pandemic the only way I knew how. By being creative.

After X of Swords, Excalibur had a whole new angle, and we took a few issues to answer some big questions about Betsy Braddock’s past and her relationship to herself, her body, and specifically, Kwannon - aka Psylocke.

I was honored to give this a try - it’s a lot to reconcile, and there’s the tangle of resolving things within the story that were the result of external, non-story decisions some 30 years ago. But Betsy and Kwannon’s relationship is a connection that crackles with potential lessons about race, womanhood, agency, and bodily autonomy, and it seemed right to begin that story now. It also didn’t escape me that I had the great pleasure of doing so with an artist of Asian descent in my co-storyteller Marcus To. Ultimately, I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out, and I think there are plenty of great Captain Britain and Psylocke stories to be told, hopefully by me and other writers for years to come.

But after that, for many layered reasons, it seemed like the time to end Excalibur was on the horizon. And many of those reasons were governed by forces inside the story, which is a rare treat in Big Two Superhero Comics. Which gave Marcus and I lots of advance notice and plenty of time to make ourselves a nice big terrible ending, where everything went wrong, Merlyn rose to power, and Otherworld became a realm where mutants could not only die, but were now hunted. You know, so I could write the book about what came next.

The Starlight Citadel is fallen, Saturnyne is on the run, and the wizard Merlyn and King Arthur hunt and kill witchbreed on sight from their Lunatic Citadel. Enormous Furies stalk the land like Sentinels on the hunt for mutant heroes.

So if everywhere else in the galaxy promises a golden age for mutants

…what would bring them to this dangerous realm, far from the range of their resurrection technology?

…what brings the Knights of X to an Otherworld that hates and fears them?

Well for one, Betsy Braddock is in there with her Captain Britain Corps, fighting a one-woman war.

For the rest, you’ll have to wait until April.

Lastly, I desperately wanted to do tell this story with an artist who already understood Krakoa. I talk so much about the writers in the X-office, but you’ll see we love to work with the same artists again and again, too - Krakoan visual language has its own learning curve. Which is why I am so excited to be working with Bob Quinn, already a true Krakoan by way of Way of X, as our series artist. He’s taking us on an incredible, fantastic quest. He blows my mind with every page. You all are going to flip when you first see how he draws our gorgeous cast.

Ah yes, the cast…Who will be the Knights of X? And what is their quest?

Can’t tell you that part yet.

Until then, Excalibur readers, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for sticking with us through this journey. I said from the beginning that I wanted to get weird, and I damn well say we did. And I couldn’t be prouder of it. If you haven’t been an Excalibur reader, I can now whole-heartedly recommend it to you. And I hope you’ll join us for Knights of X - it’s a great jumping on point for Otherworld and the X-Men.

And I’m so proud of Betsy.

Excalibur #26 Spoilers

Spoilers: Arthur’s forces take over the Starlight Citadel, but Merlyn has his eyes set on Avalon in order to force each and every mutant to cross the gates back to Krakoa. Saturnyne uses her powers to teleport herself and Captain Britain back to Castle Avalon, where they meet the rest of Excalibur.

Saturnyne explains that during the incursions (Time Runs Out, 2015), she had captured a Mapmaker and used its reality-travelling powers to escape the collapse of the Multiverse. Saturnyne and the Mapmaker landed on Blightspoke, a cemetery for broken realities. After exhausting its powers, the Mapmaker became an orb. Eventually, Merlyn and Roma found Saturnyne in Blightspoke. Unbeknownst to Merlyn, Saturnyne and Roma had forged an alliance to get rid of Merlyn. Saturnyne unleashed the Mapmaker’s power against Merlyn, essentially killing him. As a god, he would eventually be brought back to life; however, by then, Saturnyne had already secured her position as Omniversal Guardian, while securing a beautiful kingdom for Roma. In the ensuing chaos, Otherworld was reformed as we know it now, with ten realms.

Meanwhile, the British Government threatens to take action against mutantkind, as the Braddock Lighthouse begins to emit unnatural energies as a result of the Starlight Citadel’s fall to Merlyn. Xavier and Emma Frost wants to close off the gates to Otherworld for good, while Rachel tries to reason with them. Excalibur returns through the Gate. Emma and Xavier ask Betsy to forget about Otherworld and seek diplomatic contact with the authorities. Betsy thinks it’s best to fight the war on Otherworld and is encouraged by Rachel.

Back to Otherworld, Arthur’s army marches towards Castle Avalon and a battle ensues between Arthur’s forces and Excalibur, joined by the Captain Britain Corps. Jubilee decides to take Shogo back to Krakoa for his own safety. Merlyn, Morgan Le Fay and Coven Akkaba all join forces to push the mutants back to Castle Camelot and the gates. Betsy orders Excalibur to retreat and fall back to Krakoa, bringing each and every mutant with them. At that moment, Merlyn, Morgan Le Fay and Coven Akkaba combine their powers to destroy the gates. However, Excalibur manages to cross the gate because Betsy used her Starlight Sword to hold it open until everyone was safe back on Earth.

After making sure everyone was safe, Betsy asks for reinforcements to fight the war on Otherworld as she teleports back to Avalon by herself to lead the Captain Britain Corps against Merlyn. Xavier is astonished by Betsy’s bravery while Rachel notes that she’s doing what she always done: fighting for a world that hates and fears her.

Excalibur #25 Spoilers

Spoilers: Betsy reunites with Tom Lennox at the Green Lagoon bar, where he reveals his plans to reform S.T.R.I.K.E. under Pete Wisdom’s leadership. Betsy is distracted catching glimpses of the Otherworld battle in her mind and with Kwannon and Greycrow on a date also at the bar. Tom doesn’t expect them to renew their relationship but is hopeful Captain Britain might join S.T.R.I.K.E. on a mission in London. Soon enough, Alison, Vicki and Kevin join them. Betsy explains that she will fight for England in Otherworld instead and is encouraged by her dear friends.

In Otherworld, Maggie Braddock explains that Excalibur retreated back to the castle while the Captain Britain Corps held the Citadel, where Saturnyne is meditating on a scrying pool to enhance and heal the Captains. Excalibur agrees to jump into battle again while Jamie stays behind with Shogo and Maggie to protect the gate to Krakoa. Meanwhile Merlyn is casting a spell of sorts while Arthur’s forces erect siege towers and place ballistae around the Starlight Citadel.

Saturnyne deploys her White Priests against Arthur’s army. The Priests are soon joined by Excalibur, the Braddocks, Shatterstar and Bei; however, Arthur’s minions start targeting only the Captains Britain. Betsy orders the Captains to retreat, but it’s too late. Merlyn finally casts his spell wrapping the Citadel with an anti-magic bubble. Excalibur attempts to hold the Citadel’s doorway against their enemies. Betsy projects her butterfly avatar and orders her teammates to protect Saturnyne and escort her out of the Citadel.

Arthur breaks into the Citadel and meets Betsy in plain clothes. Without magic, Betsy loses her Captain Britain costume and powers. Betsy assures Arthur he won’t retake Avalon and will learn to fear mutantkind, after all he’s just a man. Betsy again projects her butterfly effect and subdues Arthur telepathically, leaving him catatonic while displaying a huge butterfly effect.

Excalibur rescues Saturnyne, just in time for Jamie Braddock to return riding Shogo. Excalibur flees riding on Shogo’s back. Betsy comes looking for Saturnyne, and Jamie just drops her for Betsy to catch. While out of Merlyn’s anti-magic bubble, Betsy becomes Captain Britain again. Betsy asks Shogo to carve a trench between the Citadel and Camelot with this reality-bending fire while Jamie holds reality together so it won’t collapse. Enraged, Merlyn casts a spell against Saturnyne and Betsy, who end up falling into the ground until they reach a place called the Sea of Secrets. Both women wake up on a small boat. Saturnyne says she’s ready to tell the story of how she took the Citadel from Merlyn.

Merlyn interrupts the Trial and introduces a witness he has brought to speak on the dangers of mutants: King Arthur himself. Arthur gathers his army in Avalon with the support of other Otherworld kingdoms. The Captain Britain Corps take Merlyn captive while Betsy decides to speak with Arthur. Arthur claims that his son Mordred is cursed because he is a mutant and that Merlyn made him realize the truth about mutantkind. Mahmud Asrar Says Goodbye to 'Excalibur'

After revealing the cover to Excalibur #26, Mahmud Asrar took to Twitter to say goodbye to Excalibur.

Asrar: A bittersweet experience getting to work on this cover as it marks the end of my longest cover run for Marvel. It was wonderful to be a part of this series and it’s all thanks to my collaborators and you!

The solicit for December's Excalibur #26 seems to indicate the book will end; however, no official confirmation was given. According to Entertainment Weekly "most (though not all) X-Men comics will temporarily pause to give the spotlight to The X Lives of Wolverine/The X Deaths of Wolverine", a weekly event running from January 2022.

Whether Excalibur will be relaunched in 2022 remains to be seen.

Excalibur #23 Spoilers

Spoilers: Dr. Doom visits the Braddock Lighthouse and requests passage to Otherworld through the Krakoan gateway. Doom hopes to use a Latverian mutant child to cross the gate and retrieve an item that belonged to Morgan Le Fay. After a brief discussion, Excalibur volunteers to guide Doom to Avalon instead. In Avalon, Meggan catches up with Excalibur while Doom leads them to the Valley of Wailing Mists. On their way to Castle Le Fay, an assassin from Sevalith engages in an assassination attempt, but his plans are foiled by Captain Britain. After the assassin disappears into the mist, Gambit remarks that relations between Avalon and Sevalith are tense these days. Meggan thinks it’s best to shapeshift into a brunette just in case. Doom is furious to learn that Castle Le Fay no longer stands on where it was supposed to. Meggan and Rictor use their powers and find out that the castle was magically taken away. Doom is enraged and demands to know the whereabouts of Morgan, Merlyn, Arthur and Mordred, Arthur’s son, while Jubilee learns from the fairies that someone took the castle to sell it in the Crooked Market.

Excalibur guides Doom to the Crooked Market. While Betsy and Doom seek an audience with Mad Jim Jaspers, Gambit takes Meggan, Jubilee and Rictor to a gambling den to have a little fun. Doom asks Jaspers for Morgan’s palace. Jaspers warns him that a box is all that was left of Morgan’s belongings. Jaspers and Doom aren’t able to reach a deal regarding the price and engage in an altercation, while Betsy is suspicious of Doom’s intentions. Suddenly, and army of Furies from the Everforge kingdom attacks Jaspers’ office specifically targeting Captain Britain and all “friends of Mordred”. Jaspers hands the box with Morgan’s belongings to Doom and tell them to leave.

Elsewhere, while Meggan, Jubilee and Rictor watch, Gambit gambles with a few locals and takes the opportunity to cheat using one of Saturnyne’s cards. While the locals reprimand him for being a thief, the place is also attacked by Furies. Excalibur flees from the Furies and ends up reuniting with Betsy and Doom. The Furies warn that they have sworn their allegiance to King Arthur and that all “friends of Mordred” must die. Captain Britain argues that attacking her is an attack against the Starlight Citadel itself and that the Furies have also sworn to abide by the Citadel’s laws. After a brief battle, the Furies decide to leave to discuss the conflicting programming with the Fury leader, Forgemaster Federal.

Back on Earth, Doom sends a letter to Betsy warning that the box from Jaspers contained a shrunken Castle Le Fay. As a token of appreciation, Doom sends the Waters of Otherworld from Morgan’s scrying pool to Betsy in the hope she is able to obtain answers regarding Arthur and Mordred. Betsy asks for Meggan’s help and Gloriana deduces that Arthur cast out his son Mordred because he is a mutant, which means that a “friend of Mordred” means mutant.
