X-Force #5 Art

  1. Love seeing the Butterfly. Though I would have thought a simple psychic illusion could have done the trick as well without having to actually boost Rachel's abilities lol.

  2. This reminds of other moments when Betsy played the illusion trick, which I loved to see (she is excellent at it!!)! As this team didn't include a telepath I agree the boost would not have been necessary too. I wonder if there is something with Rachel's powers after her effort with Dead X-Men.
I also wonder why didn't Forge just built something to gather all the energy necessary to defeat Nuklo so that Surge hadn't died.

    1. Also curious why Betsy couldn't boost Surges powers maybe she would have survived

    2. I know she did it with Iceman that one time @Randybear but I also think they had no clue what to do with her or her powers at that time lol.

Overall I think its been kinda a Psi thing. Like when Jean boosted Betsy in Dissasembled or when Betsy did with Jean in inferno.

I'm guess it also depends how the boost is working. Like is she adding/combining her psi strength & energy to Rachel to make Rachel stronger?

Or is it a boost like if someone took a pre-workout or got an expresso coffee? Lol.

If its the 2nd one, then i guess maybe you are correct in thinking it could help Surge, but not really sure.

    3. Xman ok you're right that ability probably only applies to other psychics. I was for real thinking of the Iceman moment as well lol stupid Matt Fraction 😆

    4. Seems more plausible to me applying to other psychics too. I would not be so surprised if Surge comes back in this series in the future. Forge could also build some device to ressurrect her.

  3. This butterfly effect is cute and all, but you got me psyched for a really elaborate one, like the one that covers her whole face like a mask. Hopefully, that’s yet to come.

I love when it fully manifests like this:

    1. Rahsaan right? They talked this game as if she was getting a really unique version but I'm just grateful it's there.

    2. @Rahsaan that is definitely a unique Butterfly, but I don't think I have ever seen her have one like that since I started reading X-Men.

So im assuming its been awhile for her being with a Butterfly effect like that.

It would be kinda cool for her to have different types like this is for boosting, but the one you showed would be for like scanning the area for someone etc etc.

I do kinda wish she make her hair back like the pic you shared, I think Kwannon as Revanche (in Betsy's body) had similar hair. Like curlier.

Those things would prob be asking for too much though lol. I'm just glad to see the Butterfly.

The one she has in this recent X-Force kinda reminds me of this one @Randybear (if this link works).

Only I think the X-Force one is actually better lol.

    3. Yes I had the same thought XMan it's very similar to how David Lopez drew it!

  4. You know what? I miss old techniques of comic book drawings. Seeing that picture that Rahsaan has posted the link of solidify that feeling for me. That classic look of comic drawing is really non-existent now, especially within Marvel's. Even without the 3D-esque and photorealistic approaches of today, those classic books still could capture an immersive visual experience that sometimes feels kinetic even when it wasn't. Random thought, I know, but I just think about it.

    1. Agreed. Modern comic art and animation just doesn't hit or have a warmth to it. I hate digital

  5. @randy, yes. I'm happy it's back but hoping we see greater manifestations of it, including its diversity as @X-Man and you have pointed out.

@Daud, yes. The old techniques were pretty great. I love when she displays the butterfly over her face like a mask and or when we see it atop her head complete with full manifestation of the eyes, which are basically her soul when she uses this as her psi-self/astral avatar, which we have seen To draw beautifully once before in Excalibur when Malice possessed her cloned body. I hope we see various maniufestations of it as we saw in the 80s:

  6. @Rahsaan those are good pics (although some with the eyes are a little creepy to me lol, but Marcus did a great job with the psi-self in Excalibur).

I don't know how detailed Thorne will get, as I do know it is a team book and all.

As bad as Howard's characterization of Betsy was, the book was kinda based on Betsy's journey so there was more focus devoted to her I think.

However he said he loves Betsy and unlike Howard, I tend to cautiously believe him since he got her personality and demeanor back in just one issue vs Howard's whole run imho.

So maybe it is possible? Have we seen the Butterfly at any other time besides when she gives a "boost" ?

Cause if not maybe this is the "boost" butterfly and we'll start to see other versions of it depending on what shebis doing as we previously mentioned :)

Thorne also said he'd be interested in writing a Betsy solo book at some point and I think I would be down for that.

    1. I'm hoping #7 we see more butterfly since that issue cover features Betsy and a few variants as well with her on them.

I wonder if we will ever see the psyknife again we last saw her use it on Captain Carter

    2. Oh I remember @Randybear, where she suddenly had to be careful on how to use it, since she hadn't in awhile smh lol.

I think she started using hand to hand martial arts combat again too lol.

I think Howard knew by by that point that her style wasn't working, and tried to bring back stuff fans liked, but of course it was too late by then.

I just posted what Thorne answered to me about the Butterfly below. I hope we see it a lot more soon (who knows), but not sure about the blade.

Kwannon got that solo series coming out using blades & they probably don't want to give Betsy too much of what is rightfully hers lol.

    3. @randybear

The last time she used the psiknife was on Absalom and Saul (Dragon Form) in the X-Men Unlimited: Infinity Comics

    4. @Alan that's right! Wish that run could see print someday

  7. Ok @Rahsaan I asked Thorne if the Butterfly would vary in appearance based on what psychic feat Betsy was doing.

He said he basically instructs the size and intensity of it based on what she is doing at the time, but also said it's "up to the Illustrator as it should be."

So definitely still don't know if there are variations, but I tried lol.

    1. Thanks @Xman I think our best bet at this point is to continue to encourage Marcus To we like his butterfly and would love to see it drawn more

    2. Your welcome @Randybear.

I may have said it unclear, overall I think Thorne is still in charge of when it appears as he said he instructs the size, intensity etc etc.

But other than that he said the Illustrator is in charge of the other aspects of its appearance.

I think overall Thorne is still the one we let know we love the Butterfly effect, but letting both guys know can't hurt lol.

    3. I went back and here is exact wording @Randybear.

I was too lazy before to go back, but I realize my wording sucks lol.

"my contribution to the shape or size of the butterfly is only to describe the intensity, size and what Betsy's trying to do. Everything else is the illustrator's choice. as it should be."

    4. So nice of him to take time to interact with fans. Shows his care for what he does and respects the people who support his work. I'm amazed by his drive to honor continuity while telling fresh stories and create new dynamics.

    5. Yes @Kiki.

Its great to talk to someone who can simultaneously stand his ground and stick to his vision for a story even if fans don't all agree (as some currently are very upset as to what happened to Surge)

but still shows he is listening and is not coming off as dismissive.

Very happy Betsy ended up in his hands.

  8. The butterfly is safe with Betsy its owner. Couldn't be happier
