X-Men ’97 Director Confirms Psylocke Is Betsy Braddock

Any lingering doubt about Psylocke’s identity in the animated X-Men universe can finally be put to rest. Chase Conley—a director, designer and writer who currently serves as an episodic director on X-Men ’97—has confirmed directly on X that the Psylocke seen in X-Men: The Animated Series and its Disney+ continuation is Betsy Braddock.

This is not the first time Marvel has officially connected the animated Psylocke to Betsy. In 2024, the company published a comics guide recapping Season 4 of X-Men: The Animated Series, in which it referred to the psychic introduced during “Beyond Good and Evil” as Psylocke and linked her directly to Betsy Braddock’s official Marvel profile. Marvel had therefore already identified the original cartoon’s Psylocke as Betsy two years before Conley answered the question explicitly.

Since X-Men ’97 continues the original series’ continuity, Conley’s answer identifies both the Psylocke introduced in the 1990s cartoon and the character who returned in the revival.

Naoko Mori’s performance in Season 2 had already provided one of the clearest clues to her identity. The Japanese-born, London-raised actress voices Psylocke with an unmistakably British accent—a perfect fit for Betsy, an English mutant.

Between Marvel’s own 2024 character link, Naoko Mori’s British performance and Conley’s direct confirmation, there should no longer be any ambiguity: the Psylocke of X-Men: The Animated Series and X-Men ’97 is Betsy Braddock.

  3. I figured, the voice actress pretty much confirmed it a few weeks back too.

Kwannon doesn't have a British Accent or Purple hair, so figured it was Betsy.

Nice to have even more confirmation.

  4. I don’t get why people are so surprised about Psylocke being Betsy. It’s in the 90s!!! Betsy was Psylocke (or in Kwannon’s body) in the 90s! And she clearly has a British accent.
